Try starting the configuration program directly, from the ..\SteamApps\common\divine_divinity\configtool.exe file. I assume you tried running the test, as well as skipping it?
If that doesn't start the game automatically, try running directly from the div.exe file. Maybe right click and select Properties, and in the Compatibility tab set it to run as administrator, and/or in a compatibility mode.

Thank you Raze But None Of it works. I try test And it wont even Work Then says it failed and it just keeps sending me thru that loop no matter what i do. I don't understand how any of this happened Cuz i was Playing it Before fine With no problems. Why Dose steam keep putting gmes out on their service Then leave it up 2 us to figure out the ♥♥♥♥en prob But its steams Prob. Cuz What ever File its not reading Or whatever Is beyond my control. If It was a normal Dvd I could uninstall And Reinstal. I want 2 play the game I payed for. Please try and Improve These Probs Their a Headache. WTF!!!

Would I Have any Probs With the GOG VERSION?

I think your issue has nothing to do with version of game, also, there is no "safe play" version since Divine Divinity is an old game, you need to realise this.

You can do few things that may or may not help, i'll post few Raze didn't mention:
- restart computer (though i suppose you did that and it didnt help)
- in configtool.exe, upper right corner, you'll see "reset" button. However it's not good way of reseting setting. Manually delete files named "slashed-software.cfg" and "slashed-d3d6.cfg (this particual file may be named "slashed-directx.cfg". After deleting those filesrun configtool again, set your settings, play the game.
- copy your saves to some other folder, reinstall game. If THAT wont work, especially when you say you managed to play without problems earlier, i don't know what will.

I know there have been a few people with startup problems with the Steam version that had no issue with the GOG version, but a couple who tried had the same problem.

Check out the discussion Crashes on launch and the suggestions and links there.

It fails When it tests My direct3d6.0. I think this might be the source of the prob.

Try re-installing DirectX from the ..\SteamApps\common\divine_divinity\support\DirectX90c folder and reboot.

In the configuration program, try switching to Software rather than DirectX (in the Steam library, right click on Divine Divinity and select Configure, or start the program directly from the ..\SteamApps\common\divine_divinity\configtool.exe file).

Thank You Again For all Your Help But Sadly no Luck. I was really enjoing the game Especially After i Finished The Catacombs. I Guess When i get some more money I'll try The GOG Version cuz I'm done Trying to get this game to work on steam.

Well, i got one more idea if you want to check it out.
Try running game after switching steam to offline mode. Doubt it'll help, but why not check it out :P

Actually, you should be able to exit the Steam client entirely, and start the game directly from the install folder (..\SteamApps\common\divine_divinity\div.exe).

Hello Raze figured I would just bump this page up cause im having the same problems. I usually enjoy going in and doing a little folder dancing but im afraid that today my head hangs in defeat. I have tried all the suggestions on this page and many others for steam and GOG. I have also noticed that at the end of every thread nobody excalims happily that the problem is solved. I bought this game months ago and have not enjoyed even a title screen. I dream of the config menu and awake to a cold sweat. Is there hope?

Reinstalling game or in extreme case reinstalling windows may help. Maybe download working exe file.

Yes i'm out of ideas on this one.
