Expansion sets, stronger than core ones?
Easy question. I played against a friend with my exalted (fully unlocked) and elf (few unlocks) set and he kept crying they were OP. I kept telling him it was his fault for having 80 cards decks. Then I switched to masks of dimir and lost (because well, dimir is dimir) so he bragged he was right. I then wiped the floor with him with the avacyn deck, so he said that I was lucky.

Barring the demons deck, which I haven't used but seems OP as hell, and the D&B deck which I know is OP, can the other decks really be considered too strong for the basic decks or it's his damn fault for playing mul daya and slivers with 80 cards?

I mean, the exalted deck can't possibly be op, it's a frigging three colour deck with no ramping.

I only played the demo but it seems that green deck you start off with is weak as hell. the creatures have high casting costs and low stats. the other 2 decks that the demo let me try were vastly superior. like that white one with all the humans and the +1/+1 field enchantment and when the humans die they become flying spirits and other humans get buffed +1/+1 when the other ones die so like in the 4th round, the green started deck is just barely getting 1 or 2 creatures out with 3/2 and that white one has like 6 creatures with 3/3 or more plus enchantments.

I lost to the red demo deck like 6 times before finally beating her and then i had to use the red one against that white one

my point is that some decks are stronger than others in my opinion.

maybe they only seem that way because i was playing the demo and was unable to unlock the other 35 cards, i dunno...

Most of the decks in the planeswalkers series are rock-paper-sissors counters. Green decks are great against decks with expensive creatures but bad against weenies, which are bad against things with cheap burn but bad against green's high toughness creatures.

The starter green deck is weak as hell but that's kinda the point of it.
My question was more like "are all the expansion decks too op for the basic sets to handle?"

Best Protagonist, it ain't really rock paper scissors. Dodge&Burn will happily wreck any other deck except itself and maybe masks of dimir, Avacyn is good against anything, etc etc.

Anyhow I came to the conclusion that the Elf deck is OP as hell, so I'll just avoid playing that and the dodge&burn deck.

I wont say some decks are OP. There is always another decks stronger against a certain deck. Its all about making the perfect choices of 60(!) cards to keep the randomness to a minimum. Even the green started deck works quite nice for me now. Elves can be quite slow btw and really vulnerable to removal.

Well some decks ARE op. Avacyn's glory is better than anyting else in the starter decks, Deadwalkers is a close second, Mul Daya is cool but very situational (similar to hall of heroes but for different reasons) while dracomancer is utter ♥♥♥♥♥ and masks of dimir is fun but severely underpowered. Sliver Hive seems very good but I still haven't played it.

About the expansion decks, as I said D&B is clearly OP because in a metagame where most good decks swarm you with loads of small units and everyone has tons of removal, being able to ignore removals and burn through hordes of cards like it's nothing... well it's a clear advantage.

The elf deck seems OP just because, other than being weak to removal like most all decks, it can recover quickly and you can gain incredible amounts of hp in a few turns, enough to just ignore blocking and build up an army. Then if you don't keep 2 quick removal cards to destroy their key elves, you're done for.
The samurai deck seems balanced, it's fun and becomes scary only with the Jitte out.
The exalted deck is loads of fun but, again, tri colour with no ramping what the hell.
Demon's deck seems very good but haven't played it.

Elves feel weak against Mul Daya. As it isnt very fast the All is Dust will come and after that it starts annihalating and you are done for. But I will agree that some decks work brutal against most decks.

>I only played the demo

You literally only played the starter deck with no cards unlocked. Your opinion is worth nothing when talking about balance, sorry.

I'm not a Magic veteran or anything but the forest (green) deck seems to be able to deliver some really high hits if you are lucky enough to stack enchantments. For example turning a 3/3 unit into an 11/11 with trample ability.

Which one of the green decks? The starter one is quite weak, not unusable mind you, but there's better. The mul daya deck is the "true" green deck - loads of ramping, huge creatures.
I think elves are agreat mul daya counter due to the fact that while mul daya needs about 7-8 lands to start delivering the pain (and with a bit of luck it'll take them just 4 turns to do that), by that time you can mass elves and either have infinite hp or be able to pump up a single creature to oneshot potential.

Mul Daya has bigger creatures, yes. But the starter deck is way faster and a lot more aggressive than in 2013. you can hit for 6 in turn 3 and get even more plus trample in the turns after. I just reconstructed my Garruk deck yesterday as I had to check out the 10 new cards and can say it really isnt as weak as some think.
Galf Oct 7, 2013 @ 8:07am
You still have to compare it to Avacyn, which can field bombs like the Champion of the parish from turn 1 and boost him to insane levels by turn 3 + have a lot of cheap blockers on the field
kiranearitachi Oct 7, 2013 @ 8:11am
its not the decks unless it is 2013 and you are playing mill
Lt.Loony Oct 7, 2013 @ 8:14am
Yeah thats a creature you will want to take care of asap! But with the "Prey Upon" they can be dealt with. But I'll play some games against Avcyn with my Garruk deck and see if it leads to a lot of losses to make sure Im not talking out of my a$$ here :)
And about the elves.. I just realized the Demons eat elves for breakfast =)
Laserfrog Oct 7, 2013 @ 12:49pm
I don't think most of the expansion decks are all that more powerful than the standard ones after you tune them (Dimir and Dragons notwithstanding). Even Dodge and Burn can seriously fizzle out if it doesn't draw card advantage. Dn'B and Elves are both pretty strong. Exalted and Samurai decks are fun, but kinda janky. The only one I would say is probably broken would be the Demon deck, if for nothing else than it gets 17 kill spells and 5 board wipes.
