How to make DirectInput controllers work using x360ce
First, download x360ce:
http://code.google.com/p/x360ce/

Then, extract the file, put it on the folder c:\program files (or program files x86)\steam\steamapps\sonic adventure 2. Open x360ce, allow it to create the files it asks for, allow it to search in the internet for the configuration for your controller, or you can also configure it manually.
Afterwards, close and save the settings and go to the folder Config. In there, open the file Keyboard.cfg with the notepad, change the line Player InputWay="0" to Player InputWay="1".

Note: There's 2 lines where it says Player InputWay="0", the first one is for player 1, the second one is for player 2, you don't need to change the 2nd line, you only need to change it if you have 2 controllers and want to play in multiplayer.

Now, you should open the game through the file sonic2app.exe, if you open Launcher.exe, it will reset the Player InputWay lines back to 0. If you want to be able to open sonic2app.exe through the Steam Library instead of opening the launcher, change the name of sonic2app to Launcher, and change the name of Launcher to sonic2app, this way the game will open directly without opening the launcher.

Final note, thank you user named "InternetExplorer" for the tip. ^^

Thanks for this, I was hoping I wasn't going to have to go out and buy a wired 360 controller. Or worse, play it with the keyboard.

Thanks a lot dude. After all the ways I've tried, finally got it to work. Now to find a way to get it to work with Jet Set Radio...

I got it to work fine by posting the 3 files into the Jet Set Radio folder in my Steam folder. It was a lot easier to set up than for SA2. I copied the 3 files (x360ce.ini, xinput1_3.dll and the x360ce.exe and put them in the JSR folder as they were. It worked fine for me, but I can't remember if I launched it through Steam or I ran the game from the folder.

I also want to say, thanks very much for the help ezodagrom, when I did finally get it working, I was able to play SA2 properly and it really made my day :). The only problems I still have are if you rename the Launcher and sonic2app files like you said in your post, as if you do this and run the game, it crashes. I just launch the game from the original sonic2app file in the folder via a desktop shortcut and it works fine, did renaming the files work for you though?

Yeah, renaming the files worked for me, after renaming, launching SA2 through the Steam Library opens the game directly.

Weird, it crashes for me when I do that, not sure why. I'll try it again now as I've got the controller working now so that should work too now hopefully.

Just an update to say it got it working properly including lanching from my Steam Library. Thanks so much for this guide, I really appreciate it! :)

It's a shame I already beat the game using the shoddy JoyToKey fix, but better late than never I suppose. XD Great work, whoever was persistent enough to figure this out.

Do you think there is a way for this to work with the mayflash adapter I have? It doesn't seem to:/

I would love to know this too

I've never used such adapters, so I have no idea how to make them work. :|

I spent hours trying to figure it out, maybe a way to contact the devs on such an issue?

This isn't working for me. I got a USB -> GCN adapted, followed the guide, and still nothing. All the config changing does is deactivate my keyboard. What am I doing wrong?

I have tried running from both sonic2app and launcher. I have tried renaming the files. I have changed it from 0 to 1 on both players. Still nothing.
