This game hasn't aged well has it?
A combination of the laughable voice acting, terrible editing, twitchy controls not suited for precision 3d platforming, lots of cheap shots and a camera that is outright vindictive made me pine for Generations. I see sonic 06 getting bashed for all of its flaws, yet this game is praised despite having many of the same ones.

It runs fine on my rig, nice to see near instant loading times so at least it's not buggy in the porting regard.

Generations had laughable voice acting and the editing wasn't much better. The game controls fine with the 360 controller and I have't ran in to major bugs yet. It's much better than 06 because it doesn't suffer form half-♥♥♥♥♥ production and doesn't suffer from major bugs.

Also I never really suffered from cheap shots, idk if it's because I use a controller or what but the camera was fine 90% of the time.

It was much better. SA2's voices sounded like they were recorded in one take. omochao being the worst. The camera screws with you when it tries to look cinematic since the controls are all camera perspective based. Then there's Crazy gadget's gravity sections. Where the direction you move on the stick is all screwy. Not nice over a system of death pits.

I personally think SA2 is still the best game.

I think it's the keyboard controls. I don't remember the camera angles being this frustrating when I was playing on DC!

Playing with a gamepad here (Using x360CE to get the game even recognise it!). Analogue controls certainly help compared to the keyboard's digital deathtrap, but it doesn't stop bad camera placement from not telling you what you need to know.

Here's an example:

Sky rail, right after you come off the opening rail, you'll see a spring on an outstretched bit of metal that you get to by jumping over the dash pads. As you walk along the beam, the camera rotates as you're moving, meaning that you have to constantly re-adjust the direction you press. The spring is swung out of sight meaning you have to do a hit-and-hope homing attack on it

The fact that most levels are a series of platforms floating above instant death (City escape excepted) means that the slight mistakes from the camera are a restart to checkpoint each time.

Personally the camera has always been a problem, but it only takes away from the game a little bit. I still play the GC version all the time (the reason why I don't need to buy it here, if they had taken the time to just edit the game a bit I would have jumped for it!). Just remember that it's from 2001, the dreamcast version, and the GC version is only slightly different with the multiplayer junk. You can't really compared 2001 (even 2002 if you count the release of SA2B) to 2006 or 2012 gaming.

And personally I would save yourself $10 and just enjoy the GC version again. Camera or not, it's an awesome game :)

I orignally ranked this as my second favorite but now 2006 has over taken it after replaying it. I hate that glitch on Final Rush which stops you from completing game after that platforming section.

Sonic Adventure still beats every other Sonic game still though aleast playing as Tails and Knuckles wasn't forced I hate playing as knuckles its boring and just take up too much time to find stupid ♥♥♥♥.

What glitch in final rush was that?

Also, you're honestly saying you prefer 2006 over this?

I bounce off a spring onto a rail but then you just stop still and can't move unless you jump with then you fall to your death. Its after all those platforms at about 2:30-3:00 minute mark. I think Sonic 06 is better cause I can deal with loading screen rather than playing as knuckles and tails.

Odd, never had that issue there. I've had plenty of issues with those short vertical grind rails that you're supposed to airdash on to though (Lightspeed dashes into them miss, launching too far, not launching far enough, missing and falling to my doom etc). So I share your frustration with the level if not the exact moments.

Then again, Final rush is infinitely more playble and enjoyable than Crazy Gadget. That level... man...

This is the GC version. I never played the GC version but I can tell it is because I've beat the DC version 100%, plus you need the dlc to get all the emblems. Another way to tell the that this is the GC version is that the GC version has higher poly models than the DC version which this port has the GC models.

In terms of content however you're right the game without the dlc is the DC version, but again to 100% this game you need chao karate which is in the dlc.

Does it matter when most of the target audience are in it for the nostalgia?

As far as I'm concerned it's rather rusty about the edges, but still enjoyable. Like I said, though, it's only worth it if you played it back on DC or GC.

I bought and played the game for the first time with the belief that it was the best sonic game. How anyone finds the mech stages and treasure stages fun are beyond me. Sonic's stages are fun, but that's only like a third of the game, so...

I completely agree:

Running through stages and pulling off cool stunts and learning how to make the fastest time or the best score? Fun.

Walking clumsily around a linear level attacking enemies in the same way every time? Not fun

Treasure hunting with a wall climbing character with a camera control that just isn't suited to looking around a lot? Not fun.

A completely lunch-break idea of a kart race? Not fun.

This was an issue with the series starting from the first sonic adventure. In sonic 3 & knuckles you could play as Tails or Knuckles, but the gameplay was the same at its core, you moved, attacked and were affected by the environment in the same way each time. The Sonic advance series stuck to this and worked. Sonic Rush did this with what we'd see as a more modern sonic (Still 2D based) and that worked too. But it took until Sonic Colours for a main flagship console release to actually make the gameplay all one style. No-one ever bought a sonic game for variety, they bought it for being a tight-controlling and well presented platformer.

The important thing here is that the game doesn't have to be just about sonic (Sonic unleashed shows how you can still screw that up, even if the day levels were brilliant). But keep the character roster small and the playstyles the same at the core. Playing as shadow in SA2 is fun, Playing as Blaze in Sonic Rush was fun too.
