Because it gives plenty of leeway to use your hands. Rather than have them clustered together, why not put them on opposite ends? The reason why it's done like this is because it's standard controls for most NES/Gameboy emulators ("X" = A, "Z" = B, left, right, yada yada yada). It's simple and intuitive to use. However, if it really bothers you, why not find out how to contact the Devs and ask them about it?

although i dont mind the controls, switching between left and right hand movement controls would probably be helpful to a lot of people xD
Besides, you would think that would be a reltivley easy fix for the devs...
