Super Crate Mod (Windows 8 Crash fix, Multiplayer, Customizable Keys)

Super Crate Box is a fantastic game but plenty of people on the forums here have been asking for new features, or at least some bug fixes. This is an old, free, game and vlambeer has new projects that I bet they would rather prioritize time towards. However, I dug around in the game and tried to add a few things that would make it a bit more comfortable. I also unearthed a few things from the beta version that might be fun to play with.

What this mod has:
-Windows 8 Compatibility
-2 Player Local Co-op and Battle multiplayer modes
-Widescreen resolution
-Restored beta challenge mode
-Rebindable keys (through an .ini file)
-Volume levels (through .ini again)
-Slightly better gamepad support (pausing, d-pad)

What this mod !!DOES NOT HAVE!!:
-Game modes that are not listed above
-Online/3+ player multiplayer
-Achievements/steam cards/cloud saving
-Steam ingame, or the forever in-game fix (idk what's causing that)
-Mac and linux versions
-New characters/stages/weapons/enemies
-Weapon/enemy nerfs/buffs
-Touch controls
-100% bug free code

Your old saves probably won't work with the mod. You can try by renaming it to 'crates002.sav', but you will most likely get a ton of errors by doing that. I wouldn't recommend trying.

To install:
-Go to your supercratebox folder in your steamapps directory
-Rename or delete the old supercratebox.exe file
-Extract the files you've downloaded and place them there.
-That's it. Run it in steam or run from the folder.

Final notes:
-You need at least one gamepad to play multiplayer. Two gamepads are recommended.
-If you want to play with the keyboard, you must disconnect all gamepads first.
-Remember the challenge mode is beta content, so it will be a little awkward. Don't forget that you have a back button.
-The game will recreate the .ini file if you delete your old one.
-Look at the keyreference.txt for special keyboard rebinding commands

It should be the same volume as the original. Does lowering the music value in the settings.ini file help it?

I did that. It lowered the volume, but the music is just a looping sound clip of the noise it makes when an enemy gets "angry."

I think I know why that happens. You probably don't have the music files for the game. You need to place the files in your steamapps/common/supercratebox folder. The mod wasn't intended to be ran by itself.

OK, thanks. I guess that I didn't read the instructions clearly enough.

Thanks for doing this, definitely fixed the issues I was having with crashes but it's presented a few more unfortunately. Whenever I play the game for more than a couple minutes I start getting tremendous slow down, down to sometimes less than 50% normal game speed. Also the character select screen is just a black screen for me, I assume that's what it is anyway since it only appears after I unlock another character. Playing this game back in the day on XP was so much simpler heh :p

Maybe try using compatibilty setting at windows 7? If it doesn't help, then don't bother trying the other ones.

Also, I have an old version of this mod that's stricktly a crash fix without the new features. See if this one works.

I've got it working now, when I was searching around for other fixes I did find the mentioned fix just for win8 compatibility. While that didn't work at first, having now put it in compatibility mode for win7 everything works fine. Strange since using compatibility mode on the mod .exe didn't provide any better results. Ah well! Thanks again for the fix :)

Awesome! Thanks so much for releasing this! I really wanted to get into SCB but the crashing was making the game unplayable. I'm not 100% sure this mod fixes the crashing, but I quickly got to 69 right after installing this so it's working much better.

Not working for me on w8 with a xbox controller. I load the game but it doesn't recognize xbox controller and keyboard+mouse. Only keys I can use are esc and alt f4 to close it.
