The game crashes only with Windows 8. The problem is that the game for some reason cannot process large amounts of data when running through Windows 8. To prevent the game from crashing, you either have to research and figure out a permanent fix, which I can't help you with, or you just have to make sure you're not "overloading" the game with data.

I'm not aware of every way the game can overload with data, but one way that will cause it to crash is if too much damage is dealt at once. For example, if I shoot one of the large enemies point blank with a shotgun, the game will crash, or if I use a disc gun or flamethrower on a group of three enemies or more. This happens because the game has to process the amount of damage being dealt to the enemies, and I guess it can't handle that on Windows 8.

So basically, do not overload the game with data, so try not to deal damage to many enemies at once, and do not shoot a shotgun point blank at large enemies. It is a temporary fix until something is done about the problem. This may not be your reason, but I'm having the exact same problem and have dealt with it for months, where it will crash and then Steam will say it's "still running".

(TL;DR - Don't shoot a ton of bullets simultaneously at the large enemies and do not use a flamethrower or disc gun on large groups of enemies)

This is because it's programmed in GameMaker.
GameMaker (at least this version) used DirectSound to play music. In Windows 8, support for DirectSound is almost absent in favor of better, newer technologies. OpenAL, for one.

The issue is that DS on Windows 8 is that you can only play a few sounds at once. Anything more than 3-5 sounds will overload the DirectSound output and crash the game. This is why you probably have the most problems when you're making jump shots with the shotgun at point blank, or wild-spraying the flamethrower (makes a noise for every shotgun bullet/every enemy on fire).

At one point, there was a patched version of the game made by Nyo™ ~ Famega Games (https://twitter.com/famegagames). However, it looks like they've pulled the plug on it. It wasn't perfect, anyway- the audio was laggy and it still ended up crashing at times, perhaps for other reasons.

There's very little reason for Vlambeer to move a old (but amazing) game like SCB to Windows 8- with development of Nuclear Throne in full swing, I'd doubt a fix other than a downgrade to W7 for quite some time.
