Yet, I keep playing, over and over and over. I got it last night, I currently have 15 hours already. It is hard but that's what a Rougelike is, you are expected to die hundreds, if not thousands of times. You'll keep dying but it makes winning oh so much sweeter.
So far the only things that seem to do well for me are the Engi ship and the Krestral. I've even unlocked the second layout for the Engi ship. What's nice is the Engi gives you a good chance at living in the first couple of systems. Using the ion to take out the enemy shields/weapons while launching a drone to deal all the damage usually works. The only problem is you will either need to upgrade the drone systems to get out an extra drone or two in order to deal damage in later systems. Or you can dump points into getting weapons, then getting a fast firing or multi firing weapon paired with your ion. The Krestral is my favorite so far, especially if you manage to get 2 burst lasers going for your weapons. So long as you upgrade your shielding you can get pretty far with Kestral, as long as the game doesn't really screw you over.
So far I can't figure out how to prevent ship invasions or how to win against enemies that have 2+ missile launchers for their attack. That's pretty much the reason I'm dying now...
I've never used drones or missiles. Okay. Do you really want to know?
Really?
Are you sure?
Shield are overpowered in easy mode. Get to 4 shields. Get a good beam weapon. Make sure you have a full crew. That's it.
Cloak & Teleporter. These two (the last particularly) can basically take care of the Final Boss on its own. Seriously. Teleport two fully healed crew to the isolated weapon rooms and watch as you disable the Boss's weapons one by one.
Give things a try, sometimes rockets and lasers are not the answer ;)
I have to spend more time with cloak and tele, only problem is even on easy I find it very hard to even find these systems. Its a crap shoot, but one day I'll get to the boss and it'll be sweeter than yoohoo
Now some unlocking tips :
Don`t play to win. Seriously, just go for the unlock, everything else doesn`t matter.
If it gets too frustrating, load a mod to turnt he fleet off. This is technically cheating, but the game is pretty luck based anyway, so if you`re only doing it while unlocking stuff you should`nt feel bad.
It really is a matter of chance.
Use the Stealth Cruiser (or buy long range scanners)
If you find a Homeworld, Jump only to Sectors with Ships.
Know what you must do, to unlock the Ship (FTL Wiki)
OH the innocence! Play a proper roguelike, then tell me this is hard!
don't play to unlock or any of that nonsense. When you spend your free time on something then it should be for fun (I admit unlocking stuff can be fun, so if this is something you like to do, do that but don't make it the whole purpose of playing). In the end you are playing because playing is fun. If it isn't, then probably this game just isn't for you.
This game is in so far "hard" as it confronts you with randomly generated enemies. Some of which may just be the perfect counter for your current equipments. This game is kind of oldschool in its approach to difficulty in some way. It is quite hard but you can minimize the dangers you are confronted with and find ways around them the more you play. If this game would continually throw easy encounters on you, would there be any thrill left? Also... wouldn't it be a VERY short game (those who have gotten to the mothership know what I am talking about. If this game was easy, you would probably have beaten it after like 2 hours.
I for one haven't even tried out "Easy" difficulty and find Normal quite rewarding. After 30 hours I can almost always get to the last sector although I still need to find a proper way to deal with the mothership.
By pure chance I have unlocked 2 designs. I will not try to collect more designs "as the reason why I play this game" until I have beaten that mother-**cking -ship.
