I don't know about you but
This is the hardest freaking game i've ever played. I'm at hair pulling levels of frustration right now. All I want is a new ship. After 7 hours of playing I could figure out no way to get one except for the engi ship which they just give you. Before you say I suck, this game is totally random, eliminating the suck factor at least slightly.

Finally found the Zoltan Homeworld. Literally went to each node except for about 3 and nothing. I was so excited to finally find a homeworld, just to be disappointing. THe first ship's achievements are stupid hard. If you want all the systems and subsystems, you can't repair or buy anything else unless you get stupid lucky, which I am not.

I'll keep at it, but I may have to switch to BL2 in order to keep my hair

I'm kinda at the same point as you are with it being so frustrating. The first 5 hours I figured it was because I simply didn't know the game enough. However, once I started to get rolling and doing well.. *Encounter!* "You don't know how, but people warped onto your ship past your shields!" and proceed to get wtfpwnd by 4 guys. Another favorite is trying to help a ship out of an asteroid, only to cause a violent calaspe and explode, since apparently having half hull hp wasn't enough.

Yet, I keep playing, over and over and over. I got it last night, I currently have 15 hours already. It is hard but that's what a Rougelike is, you are expected to die hundreds, if not thousands of times. You'll keep dying but it makes winning oh so much sweeter.

So far the only things that seem to do well for me are the Engi ship and the Krestral. I've even unlocked the second layout for the Engi ship. What's nice is the Engi gives you a good chance at living in the first couple of systems. Using the ion to take out the enemy shields/weapons while launching a drone to deal all the damage usually works. The only problem is you will either need to upgrade the drone systems to get out an extra drone or two in order to deal damage in later systems. Or you can dump points into getting weapons, then getting a fast firing or multi firing weapon paired with your ion. The Krestral is my favorite so far, especially if you manage to get 2 burst lasers going for your weapons. So long as you upgrade your shielding you can get pretty far with Kestral, as long as the game doesn't really screw you over.

So far I can't figure out how to prevent ship invasions or how to win against enemies that have 2+ missile launchers for their attack. That's pretty much the reason I'm dying now...

its mostly luck on being able to get the other ships unless you know exactly what to do(besisdes federation cruiser) i have the the the first 4 ships

Use cloak or an anti-missle drone to deal with missles. For invaders open the airlocks on everthing but the medical bay and squat your guys in there to deal with the attackers.
I'm at 20 hours. I'm pretty confident about being able to pass through the whole game every time on easy. Normal, on the other hand, I'm not ready for yet. But there's a pretty easy strategy for the starter ship if you can figure it out.

I've never used drones or missiles. Okay. Do you really want to know?

Really?

Are you sure?

Shield are overpowered in easy mode. Get to 4 shields. Get a good beam weapon. Make sure you have a full crew. That's it.

I realized, after many hours, that the two things that I overlooked were the two things that continously get me the win in every game.

Cloak & Teleporter. These two (the last particularly) can basically take care of the Final Boss on its own. Seriously. Teleport two fully healed crew to the isolated weapon rooms and watch as you disable the Boss's weapons one by one.

Give things a try, sometimes rockets and lasers are not the answer ;)
Loobintime 2012 年 10 月 9 日 下午 11:23
Like Setzway alluded to, its usually a completely random event. For instance, just now I had engines fully upgraded, skilled crew at every station, kinda crappy weaps (two basic lasers and a hull beam 2) and what killed me was four mantises warping in to my O2 room. since my crew was human and engi and slug.....that was on the 6th sector.

I have to spend more time with cloak and tele, only problem is even on easy I find it very hard to even find these systems. Its a crap shoot, but one day I'll get to the boss and it'll be sweeter than yoohoo

haha. After 7hours you expect to unlock all the ships? I played for 50 hours and now finally got all except 2 ships. Unlocking ships are complicated, you dont just jump into a beacon and recive a ship. Try googeling how to unlock ships. When it comes to it being random and hard...thats the reason we bought it wasnt it? Took me 30hours to just beat it on easy. Perhaps im a noob but, dont expect to much after just 7 hours.

According to Steam I`m at 55 hours, several wins on both Easy and Normal, 8 ships unlocked, most with their second layout. So either I`m very lucky or you guys are just unlucky.
Now some unlocking tips :
Don`t play to win. Seriously, just go for the unlock, everything else doesn`t matter.
If it gets too frustrating, load a mod to turnt he fleet off. This is technically cheating, but the game is pretty luck based anyway, so if you`re only doing it while unlocking stuff you should`nt feel bad.

I won't say I'm at the level of frustration that you are, but I was beginning to wonder if I would ever Unlock another ship (I had the Fed, the Engi, & the Cloaked) just yesterday and I unlocked the Rock Cruiser! Pure luck...it's a very simple "cat & mouse" Quest.
It really is a matter of chance.

me and my family have over 70 hours and I had my first easy win yesterday...so yeah have fun. the loadout I had was Zoltan ship with full systems an ion and an ionII and 2 pike beams also drones and 40% evasion, full shields, and no cloaking or teleporter. but I wooped that ship and couldn't believe it worked

An easy way to unlock ships:
Use the Stealth Cruiser (or buy long range scanners)
If you find a Homeworld, Jump only to Sectors with Ships.
Know what you must do, to unlock the Ship (FTL Wiki)

The main thing that's helped me improve my success rate is to hold onto scrap as long as possible. Upgrade when you feel you need the extra surivability, otherwise hoard so that you can buy systems / weapons from the stores. Crew tele can get you kills very easily, especially if you have rock / mantis, and stronger weapons are essential to disabling enemies before they can cause you significant damage. Shields are quite helpful, and should be upgraded fairly early, but aside from that scrap is better spent on offensive equipment. At least in my opinion.

I'm just here to post a snide comment:

OH the innocence! Play a proper roguelike, then tell me this is hard!
Sharza 2012 年 10 月 11 日 上午 10:19
Hi,

don't play to unlock or any of that nonsense. When you spend your free time on something then it should be for fun (I admit unlocking stuff can be fun, so if this is something you like to do, do that but don't make it the whole purpose of playing). In the end you are playing because playing is fun. If it isn't, then probably this game just isn't for you.

This game is in so far "hard" as it confronts you with randomly generated enemies. Some of which may just be the perfect counter for your current equipments. This game is kind of oldschool in its approach to difficulty in some way. It is quite hard but you can minimize the dangers you are confronted with and find ways around them the more you play. If this game would continually throw easy encounters on you, would there be any thrill left? Also... wouldn't it be a VERY short game (those who have gotten to the mothership know what I am talking about. If this game was easy, you would probably have beaten it after like 2 hours.

I for one haven't even tried out "Easy" difficulty and find Normal quite rewarding. After 30 hours I can almost always get to the last sector although I still need to find a proper way to deal with the mothership.

By pure chance I have unlocked 2 designs. I will not try to collect more designs "as the reason why I play this game" until I have beaten that mother-**cking -ship.
