How to save in FTL.
To save in FTL follow these steps:

1) Save & Exit
2) Go to C:\Users\User\Documents\My Games\FasterThanLight
3) Create a folder, call it Backup
4) Copy continue.sav to your new folder.
5) Reopen the game to play.
6) When you die, close the game and copy continue.sav from your Backup folder back to its regular location.
7) Reopen FTL and continue.

This is called Scumsaving. You shouldn't do it but it help noobs figure out how the game progresses and it can help mitigate frustration... not so much though.

this would defeat the purpose of the "roguelike" style of the game. Having death lurking over you all the time is a important factor.

The OP did point out that it should mainly be used by beginners to figure out the key mechanics of the game. They still get punished by having to reload their save so at least they learn lessons (perhaps not as firmly though) as other players. For actual gameplay though, yes, it would severly damage the experience.

It's worthwhile to see that going back and changing your dicisions doesnt make the game any easier. It's still hard, and you still die often.

Still dont like it tbh. You can spend hours playing and gain nothing just because when you die your back at 0. Im not a big fan of the whole Hardcore your dead = everything you did means nothing deal. Dont think ill be playing this game long if they dont add some sort of save to it.

I like perma-death games and for me it adds value, but I can understand people who dislike it. I think they should have handled it like Dungeons of Dredmor: Just be able to select at the beginning if you want saving or not. Perhaps add some special stuff for perma-death enabled, to give people an incentive to try it, even if they are not actually comfortable with it.

Well, the game is only an hour long anyway; if there were a save feature, there'd be no point. That's not hardcore; you're going to quit playing all your other games some day, and not have gained a thing from them. Its a game: when you loose you loose. That's how most games have been since games were invented.

I typically scumsave boss games. Like this:

http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=96673315

Lots of scrap after I win the fight(250ish).
Good upgrades already.
5 Gold Level crew: Flight(Human, 2nd level repair), Shields(Human, in med bay), Engines(Human, w/ 2nd level melee), Weapons(Engi), Melee(Rockman)
Other equipment in cargo: fire beam, fire bomb, attack Drone
Mods: Drone arm, scrap arm

I love replaying this game. I have to scumsave this.

Interesting, i've only made it to the end boss once so far and he had a slightly different ship layout than that for me. As for saving, i've always thought of it as a basic component to gaming. Never thought i'd be ok with a game that doesn't even give you the option (i've always HATED checkpoint save systems in games for forcing me to repeat even 10 seconds of gameplay) but for some reason it really hasn't bothered me in this game.

Maybe it's because the game was set up with that in mind. Maybe it's because I went into this game knowing exactly what to expect from it. Who knows, I just know I love it even though every game after my 3rd has gone horribly. =D

There are plenty of games that don't have saving, particularly older games that this game shares lots of traits with. Tetris might seem like a stupid example, but the combination of relatively short sessions of play with highscores, survival, and a tense atmosphere when things get hairy is in some ways a similar structure to FTL.

Donkey Kong might be a better example in that it does have an end goal, and it can take a reasonable amount of time to get there. It's also punishingly difficult, at least for me. :P

Funny how I actually hate both of the games you've used as an example of how it isn't uncommon...

Anyway, i'm well aware that a save game feature doesn't exist in every game. For some it isn't even appropriate (see pretty much ANY puzzle game.) I just think of it as a matter of choice for the player to determine what they want to do with saving a game. If you really want your game to be perma-death you can simply never save the game and disable autosaves and ANY game can be perma-death.

As I said before though, it doesn't seem to bother me with this game at all.

Saving can help you figure out how the mechanics of the game work. It also helps you realise that saving doesnt really matter in this game.
GBM 18/set./2012 às 12:51
Lawl. I'm not worried, since saving doesnt offer a gameplay advantage. You still die if you dont know what you're doing.

Call me noob if you wish, but i've been playing roguelikes for a loooong time and I know first hand that saving doesnt offer any advantage... other than to show you how the game works. And like I said, you still die if you dont know how to play the game.

Man you are so stupid that you must post this and give it to noobs >_<
Who help noobs is itself noob.
To hell with you!!

Many people are cheating in single player games or doing strange things like running a bus line in GTA. So... never mind it's a single player game. It doesn't matter for your game experience if someone is cheating or not.

Helping newbs is a sign of being a newb.

That's some interesting logic you have there.
