Thirty hours in, just beat the game for the first time.
So excited! Used the Osprey (downloaded a save with all ships once I had twenty hours in or so). Level 3 shields, around 40 evasion, 2 burst lasers mark 2, one hull laser mark 2, 2 defense droids. Lost a lot of crewmembers by making dumb mistakes (like having the Artillery blow up the enemy while my Mantises were still aboard it, or sending my Rockman back to man the Shields, not noticing that I still had it vented.)

I'm definitely gonna play again, but are there any other roguelikes like this out there? Not necessarily in terms of theme being spacecraft, but just in the way you carefully have to think out decisions. I have Binding of Isaac but it's a lot less fun to me than FTL is.

Congratulations on beating the game!

While the theme is vastly different, I've enjoyed Dungeons of Dredmor in a similar way. It's a turn-based fantasy roguelike, and being turn-based it of course emphasizes good decision-making. Death is a bit more frustrating than in FTL because games are a lot longer, but on the other hand you can customize your character build to such an extent that the experience will always be a new one when starting over.

Like FTL it seems very difficult at first, but gets much easier once you get a grasp of how the game works. It took a while for thing to really "click" for me, but once they did I couldn't stop playing - and now it's easily the most played game in my entire steam library. It's pretty cheap, too.

This game is like a mistress that keeps kicking and slapping and humiliating me, yet.. I keep going back for more.
Sector 6 is the furthest i've ever made it. ..and even then, my ship was manned by one guy and held together with some duct tape.
The ship got invaded, and was on fire and everything was busted. ..So he opened all the airlocks and suffocated the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥s right before going down with the ship.
(I kinda wish this game had a mechanic where they actually got 'sucked' out of the airlock when the doors open)

If you like this, you might want to try Dwarf Fortress.
Its free, and awesome. ...if you can get past the confusing UI and learning curve.

I've had Dwarf Fortress for a long time but never got around to actually playing it because everything I hear about it scares me. Still, one day perhaps.

1 word, invisibility

Well yeah either invisibility or a some defense drones help a lot. And you'll need strong crewmembers, a Rockman/Mantis or two to be able to deal with those annoying boarding drones.

I had already unlocked about 60% of all ships and layouts. Didn't see much point in continuing when I read how tedious it was to unlock the Crystal Cruiser.

A roguelike/lite not having all content available at the start is just a way for it to give people not into clean slate starts a sense of progression. Removing that doesn`t really count as a cheat IMO.

Defeating the boss with a ship which should've been unlocked by defeating the boss definitely sounds silly.
