No shields until you get to a shop and buy it for 150 Scrap, starting with Cloaking in no way compensates.
I think the prime issue is that "basic laser." Worst weapon in the game. It can't pierce a zoltan shield in less than 1-2 minutes. The crew can't pierce it. The system bomb can't pierce it.
I get that I need to run, but by the time FTL charges, they've fairly well cost me the game. Worse is zoltan shield combined with a drone or asteroid field (again in sector 1). I can go from 30 hull to dead waiting for FTL charge. Maybe its bad luck, but I've yet to make it out of sector 1 with Mantis A on Normal. If I swap to the Kestral, I feel like I'm back on Easy mode.
Note: Not complaining. For me, Mantis A is essentially turning on "hard mode" which is fine. I suspect if I can avoid a zoltan shield until I can upgrade something, it might be easy street thereafter.
Other than that. I think the ships are pretty well balanced, though with some ships you need to find the right things in order to have a chance. My personal favorite is Mantis ship B (Took me quite a while to get). It starts with 2 shields, 2 mantises, some drones, a crew teleporter that fits 4 crewmembers (Only 2 ships have this) and no weapons. In the beginning you will get screwed over if you find an automated ship, since there's no oxygen, or if the ship has a zoltan shield you can't beat it at all. so what you quickly need to get is weapons and crew members.
Stealth cruiser can easily have a rough start but once you get shields, it's pretty much all good.
Mantis B is sort of the same yet not. Same tactic, but with Mantis you get Mantis Men and something that make them faster, and the race alone seems to make more sense for me. Cave Johnson, Eat your Heart out.
EDIT: Get a non-missile weapon for Mantis B and you can pretty much eat any baddie you come across.
On topic, my least favourite is the Slug B: no medbay, a 2 slot teleporter,no sensors to see what you are up against and only slugs to board with even though the main strategy for this ship is to board. An unfortunate miss with a Healing burst is devestating.
It's a fun ship, but expect a challange.
1) Mantis A
2) Zoltan A
3) Slug A
So: 3rd place goes to Slug Cruiser type A. It has decent weaponry, but only 2 crew. No sensors is always fun, cause you can't see fires. This ship is focused mostly on killing enemy crew. But when you can't get through his shields or when you're boarded - you're screwed :)
2nd place - Zoltan Cruiser type A. Someone might think 'well, he has zoltan shield and beam, which is capable of taking down most of the ships in first two sectors'. That's true and that's only benefit of this ship. Zoltans are terribly slow at repairs and useless at extinguishing fires (layout of the ship doesn't help much in venting out the oxygen either). When you're boarded - you're screwed (one mantis is enough to make your whole crew run between medbay and fighting area) and boarding parties often get through your zoltan shield. Additional pain in the ass is when your crew has to move somwhere. They provide one additional power bar to system, so when they move, it 'transfers' in some weird way and sometimes you end up wasting one full charge cycle, because you had to move your weapon guy to help fixing shields or smth. Zoltan A - sux ass
1st place - Mantis A. I just don't get this ship. Only benefits - mantises and teleporter. Everything else is steaming pile of ♥♥♥♥. Crappy weapons, no sensors (you can't see fires and hull breaches), mantises are TERRIBLE at repairs (so you're wasting all of your scrap in stores to repair your damaged hull), your ship is helpless against automated scouts (it took me about 2 minutes to kill one of these with my powerful single laser, which was missing like 2/3 of all shots) and zoltan ships (you can't get through their energy shield without wasting 3 rockets, but before you manage to do that, your ship is already being torn apart by enemy weapons). I thought, that Mantis ship should be strong, but what we get instead is a little helpless ♥♥♥♥♥, that can't get through most of obstacles thrown at you by game in sector 1. PIECE OF ♥♥♥♥ :D
Get crew teleporters. The teleporter is installed RIGHT next to the medbay, making healing between raids really quick. I made it to boss phase 2 with that ship.
