DO NOT board ships that are in a asteroid feild(unless they have 2 or more sheilds) OR board a ship thats near a Class M star.
SINGLE.
TIME.
It was actually pretty funny when I noticed it had red rooms because it didn't need oxygen.
Also losing your pilot when your engines are at max and the guy manning engines is lvl2 it's not that big of a deal since the new guy will level up very fast.
Ignore the autofire button. Yep ignore it. Or change its texture to the Want To Lose button.
Even if you have a weapon that you legitimately want to autofire, use CTRL click instead.
And the number one rule is never get greedy. I have lost so many time because I jumped into the fray in a questionable situation after a long string of easy wins. You can quickly get over confident and it only takes a single event like a missile getting in on a critical system of your strategy and its game over.
a) Passed through a zero O2 room (easy to do when sensors are out - I don't run my wounded through dark rooms for this reason - they get advance scouts if necessary)
b) Enemy hit that room with laser/beam/missle/bomb (most likely)
c) Enemy unit continues to fire on you as you're exiting the room
I've let a unit fight till it blinked; teleported a bomb into the room; let it fight two more rounds till I couldn't see its health sliver; hit pause when it was down to 2 hp; teleported it home as the bomb detonated; ran it through the ship; and had it camp in a non-powered medbay til the end of battle, if necessary.
In 300+ boardings, I have never seen a bleed effect.
Conversely, when I'm fighting an unusually tough boarding scenario where they have the advantage of a med bay, I time my ship's weapons to slaughter them en route - usually dropping a bomb into the medbay itself just as they open the door.
A neigh dead mantis, however, is great at leading a fruitless chase through the enemy ship waiting for his next pick up.
