If you're finding normal too frustrating, move down to easy, this is a very hard game to play.
There's lots of advice out there if you search for it. The most important thing is to avoid taking damage because every point of damage costs scrap to repair which means less scrap to upgrade. As such the best thing to do is generally considered to upgrade your shields first and when you are fighting aim for their weapons room first to take it off-line. Also, use your missiles sparingly, as lasers are free but you have to pay to replace missiles.
Oh, and NEVER rely on missiles as your main damage source. If you are playing the Kestrel A, which I assume you are if you just started, use your BLII more. It's one of the best weapons in the game because it's 3 shots for 2 power, rather fast and combos well with pretty much every weapon.
thanks! I had just started to realize that engines were good to upgrade
I tried it a few times I didn't want to do it there because they sabotaged the weapon system and by the time they died and the airlock became safe i would have been killed but maybe ill try it next time
If there's a fire, you should always think about if it would be better to have your crew put it out, or open the doors and vent the fire out.
Remember that running away is an option! If you jump into a beacon and immediately take heavy damage to weapons and have fires in your ship, it's probably worth running away to put out the fire and repair systems in a safe area rather than sit and take more hull damage.
The right crew can help deal with tricky situations too. Engi repair twice as fast as other races, so they're great for quickly repairing weapons or shields in the middle of a fight. They also put fires out twice as fast. I always try to have one or two engi on my ship.
If you're having trouble with boarders, consider picking up some mantis crew members. Mantis move quickly and have 1.5x damage in combat, but repair at half speed. Even if you have no teleporter, they're great for defending the inside of your ship from enemy boarding crew.
Upgrading the door subsystem also help a lot dealing with boarders. With level 3 doors you can often suffocate them before they get a chance to damage any systems or crew.
Remember you can always play on easy! I know these days most games' easy mode is way too easy, but FTL is a hard game. Most people take a dozen (sometimes more) tries on easy before they can win.
There's nothing wrong with starting on normal though. You'll probably learn a lot faster.
And you have about the correct analysis of the situation - FTL is a game that FEELS luck-heavy at first, but has a deceptively high skill ceiling; good enough play will overcome virtually any amount of bad luck.
The most important thing you can do in this game is to pause often. Take time to address the situation at hand, to deal with boarders, to aim your weapons together, etc.
Next most important: visit as many beacons as possible before going to the next sector. More beacons means more scrap.
Beyond that, consider checking out my detailed tutorial run: http://www.twitch.tv/darktwinge/c/2609597. It was made before AE but is largely still relevant.
Unless you are playing Rock B ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
