Achievments
literally every other roguelike on steam has them. This game will be the last one I pick up after Nuclear throne, BOI, Spelunky ect. purely because the devs didnt include achievments

It has, in-game ones. I'm fine with that.
Having some games without steam achievements is quite nice cause they don't bring down your average game completion rate on your profile's achievement showcase if you don't earn very many of them.

i really dont understand the appeal in achevements. tokens you earn for doing tasks you wouldnt otherwise do, which go to a total score for how many you have done, which proves what exactly?

may very well be the problem, it seems good achevements are the exception. especialy the no-effort ones, like 'beat chapter one', or 'equip your first sword'.

they have to matter somewhere or else they wouldnt exist. the thing is, they exist now because other game have them, i do have to wonder what the original reason for achevements is...

Indeed there is a problem! Trivial ones like that are not so much of an issue(and they make sense for linear games like quests). Worst achievements are grinding ones or some ridiculous stuff like "play with a developer" :steamfacepalm: Multiplayer-only games have the worst achievements, because they lack content so usually 90% of achievements in those games are pure grind.
Broken and unobtainable are also bad.

Good achievements are challenges for player and/or allow them to explore more content in the game without missing anything worthy.

Some achievements in FTL are grind, but you'll reach them anyway playing all ships, so it doesn't matter. Ship achievements and "feats of git gud" are quite good.

See achievements in Gods will be Watching for example, i think they're good. Player most likely would like to try those things himself anyway or would be interested to partake in a challenge. Also that game is brilliant in itself, another look into human society vs aliens society in another form. Also it's hard like FTL.

If the game had steam achievements which would unlock regardless of on which difficulty you did them on, getting 100% completion wouldn't be any trouble at all.
But if the ones for doing them on normal and hard would be separate achievements from easy, it is safe to say your average completion rate would take a huge plunge.

Also, out of the silly achievements like "Play the game for the first time" you can see how many people who own the game actually played it.
I seriously seen some games where 20% of the players don't have it, I know it may be that case of buying too many games on a sale and forgetting.
But I never understood how can you buy a game and never play it...

well thats why achievements are great, If you are one of the few to actually get the harder achievments, then it feels great, meanwhile the people that dont do the achievement usually dont care about them in the first place so no harm done.

I have done stupid boring grindy ♥♥♥♥ in games just to earn cheevos. No judgement, man. But for me, the times in my life when I've been obsessed with those delectable lil cheevolinos have been when I was unhappy with my life. Derpressed. Cheevonoonoos provide an addictive rush of dopamine on completion, even if from another perspective they are arbitrary "wastes of time." I'm still not sure if focusing on them has ever been helpful for me, as a relief from pain i couldnt immediately face... Or if they were a distraction, holding me back from working through my ♥♥♥♥, delaying my growth for longer than I would have otherwise made progress.

Unsolicited advice? Take a step back. Cheevoli can be fun, games are rad, but all things in moderation. You've got a *life* to achieve. And gaming is a part of that, no doubt. It's a great hobby. But maybe give yourself a cheevo for hitting the gym. Do the dishes without being asked? Cheevo. 3.0 GPA? You know that's a cheevo. Take a risk on asking that cutie out? Cheevo.

Then buy one of the best games I've ever played, ever ever ever, FTL, and start racking up those nourishing (in-game) cheevmondos.

Who cares about achievements
Who cares about other people's achievements
Meneluma Apr 22, 2017 @ 8:33am
If many developers stop making annoying achievements like kill 100k enemies or spend 5m ingame money, that would be great, those are plain up annoying. Especially if the number is way higher than you could normally get in two playthroughs(one for normal, one for hard, I like that style) if there are no different endings and the like.

Then there are times when they are bugged and no one bothers fixing them.
I'd have 10/17 of my games 100%, but two games have two bugged achievements each, and even though I did what I was asked, they don't unlock.
So anyone who has a 100% completion rate on everything, most likely did research and bought only those games that are easy enough to 100%.

At least FTL not having achievements means I don't have to bother playing Fed and Zoltan C at all...

FTL is a very hard game. There is no end to the challenge in FTL.

But it *has* acheivements in-game. So the challenge layer is right there. The only thing is they don't show up on steam so you can't check out those of others (you can still brag about your own if you screenshot the menu - so do that).
