A game that potentially could have been truly great, marred by unpolished controls and lousy game mechanics
I wish Steam had a neutral rating or sideways thumb because I would have picked that for this game. It's not a bad game but I don't consider it great either. It's an ok game. I chose the thumbs down because I haven't seen any reviews that mention some of the glaring issues I find with this game.
I really wanted to like this game. I tried very hard to. But it's just ok. This is the most frustrating racer I've ever played in my life. The first major problem is the controls. Each of your vehicles (car, plane, boat) handle differently and I'm willing to bet that the vast majority of people who start out in this game will prefer their vehicles in that exact order because the car handles better than the plane and the plane handles better than the boat (by far).
The car handles decently, but could have been tighter. The drifting can fail occasionally. I'll drift in one direction and then switch directions but my car still goes in the same direction even though I clearly pushed the thumbstick the opposite way. It's hard to enjoy a racing game when the controls aren't reliable.
The plane's controls are looser and more sensitive than the car's which means there's a greater chance of oversteering and flying wildly. I definitely feel less confident in a plane than in a car. But it's nothing compared to the boat, oh my god.
The boat controls are absolutely awful. The worst I've experienced in any game. There's like input lag when steering the boat (to make it mimic a real boat I guess) but this inaccuracy makes you constantly over and understeer and it's very easy to go all over the place. After 40 hours of playing this game I still dread going into the water. It has such an uncomfortable feel to it. Why did they make the controls so awkward?
I've read other reviews where they praise this game's tight controls. I have to wonder if we're playing the same game. There is nothing tight about the plane or boat controls. Is it my controller? I mean it works fine for every other game I've played, including this game's predecessor -- Sonic & Sega All-Stars. That game handled fine. Why is this one so terrible?
This brings us to the second major problem: the game mechanics. More specifically the physics. When you are driving a car or boat and you get hit in the air by anything -- an opponent's weapon, the terrain, etc., your vehicle falls like it's in low gravity (it also happens when going off a ramp/jump at a very slow speed). You will SLOWLY float down until you hit the ground or water, and depending on how high you are, can take FOREVER. This game has without a doubt the worst vehicle recovery time of any racing game I know of. It is not uncommon to take 3, 5, even 10 seconds to regain control because your vehicle doesn't land properly and you can't do anything about it. This really ruins the fast-paced nature of the game. Sometimes your boat will land in the water upside down (??). Sometimes it will float down on a rock and you can't move and gotta wiggle your way out. Or your car lands on the terrain of an uphill incline and your front wheels don't touch the ground; you are stuck there with your car standing on its rear end and the game doesn't respawn you. It's stupid and makes the game feel broken. Your vehicle should not drop in slow motion, should always land upright, and the game should automatically detect if you're stuck and then respawn you.
Also when your car falls off the edge it doesn't instantly show the animation of your car flying off into the distance and then teleporting you back on the road. Your car has to fall for a certain period in order for it to trigger the respawn. So if you drive off the edge at a very slow speed, you will slowly fly through the air until you reach that point where it triggers the respawn which can take many extra seconds to do. That is sloppy and dumb. The second you fall off it should trigger the animation so it always takes the same amount of time to respawn.
Colliding with other cars is also extremely annoying because there is some wild bouncy physics going on. Simply getting nudged by another car can you send you flying off to the side. Sometimes hitting a car in front of you will make your car bounce backwards like 50 feet and come to a full stop! Very lame and irritating physics. Usually in a kart racing game it's not a big deal to bump the other player and can be fun to do so but not in this game. It's unpredictable and you'll be consciously avoiding contact with other vehicles. The exception is if you intentionally and forcefully sideswipe them then you can be assured it will send them and not you veering off.
The AI is brutal and awful and they will all pile on with attacks and bully you to no end. There is no invincibility after getting hit like there was in Sonic and Sega All-Stars so you can be in 1st place and get hit 5 times in a row and suddenly be last in a blink of an eye.
The game's lack of polish is also noticeable by the inability to customize races. You can't change the number of laps. You can't enable or disable weapons or only allow certain types of weapons. The game will randomly give 3 maps for everyone to vote for instead of letting us vote for any map we want. There's no free driving mode to practice the maps. There's no ready-up button in the lobby so everyone is forced to wait the full amount of time before the game starts which is annoying. You can't change your controls in-game; you must exit the game entirely and enter a separate configuration menu.
There is also zero social interaction with other players. The voice chat is completely broken. All voices come through staticky and garbled whether you're in lobby or in-game. There is no text chat in the lobby or in-game. You might be thinking, who's going to have time to type while racing? Well you could type before the race starts, after you finish the race, or if you're so far behind you don't give a damn you can type then too. The point is, you should be able to chat in a multiplayer game. The inability to communicate at all with other people makes this feel not too different than playing against the AI.
You also can't drive the wrong way (unlike the previous game). The second you try you get teleported. Now why would you want to drive the wrong way? Because it's always a funny and cool thing to do in racer games. If you're so far behind there was no chance of you catching up, you could say screw it and drive in the opposite direction to mess with the other players. Not in this game.
My apologies for this long essay of a review. I wanted to be thorough in why I think this game is overrated and does not deserve the overwhelmingly positive rating. Because it's simply more frustrating than fun. You'll have tiny moments of enjoyment and the rest of the time you'll be screaming at your monitor wondering why the controls aren't responding the way you want or why it's taking so long to regain control of your vehicle. It's a damn shame because this game could have been so good. As it is it feels like an unpolished, unfinished, ok game.
I also wanted to give a hearty ƒuck you to Sega for screwing up a second racing game. The first one, Sonic & Sega All-Stars -- which I feel is a better game -- they removed the multiplayer for the PC version (for piracy fears) while console users got to play it online. Thanks Sega.
