This game is not like any other mmo. Don't use any experience of other mmo as a basis to play this one. Leave everything you know about mmo's before you play this game. It's how different it is.
Monsters are not over-powered. Your just really weak. If your trying to kill wolves when you just started the game, you will die. There are foxes in town of a reason.
Battles are are fast paced and high risk for both you and the monster. It can kill you with one combo and you can kill it with one combo but you have to use other skills to win. Defense, counterattack and windmill will be your defense. You have to observe the monster and watch out for what it does so you can react accordingly.
But yeah, Lag does mess up that flow in battle. There's double rainbow right now and its only in limited time so expect lag during those times.
I'm okay with this game not because I sank money on this game. I'm okay with this game because there is nothing else like this game. If you find me some other game that's like this but better, I'll gift you any game of your choice.
Game also ends it for old players when they run out of things to do pass the main story quests + grinding for certain skills/gear they really wanted. Thus this is also a very good on and off game where you kind of have to just play for like 1-2 months at a time and let game patch and update so more stuff to do and you can delve yourself into it for another 1-2 month.
That's called missing.
>"the game lags you so that even if you use melee and knock it down... the mob has time to get up and attack you and not let you hit it when you should be able to as the game makes you run around like an idiot before swinging your weapon"
The mob is supposed to have attack priority once you knock it down. You can't just infinitely chain-beat your opponent to death without using any skills. Mabinogi combat does not work that way. When you knock him down, you should be readying your defense for when he gets back up - Defense, Counterattack, or Windmill. Did you even play the tutorial?
"Running around like an idiot" in a fast-paced battle of wits is how Mabinogi combat works, and it's the main appeal.
So to tl;dr this....
This game has a steeper learning curve than most games I play.
Game's old, thus time proven...
Still has a steady stream of new players comming in...
Despite the fact that it's been years, alpha testers still play avidly...
I'm done arguing the mecanics. The success of the game reflect wether it's good or not.
Really? This game fails at teaching you how to play?
First thing first, did you even bother to do the beginner quests?
And Really? A wiki is unacceptable for a mmo? A game even?
So does that invalidate all the wiki for almost every games (including mmos) in existence?
Where else do we store all our 'godly knowledge' then?
I didn't only spend money and time on it (and even if I did I only spent some to customize my character's looks, and buy a few mystery boxes and dyes and such for myself or a friend), I took a lot of time actually socializing most in this game, seeing how it's more approachable than a crappy WoW where you pay monthly subscription to grind your ass off for who knows what.
And the game isn't punishing at all. Demons' Souls is punishing, Dark Souls (and #2) is punishing, but Mabinogi is your typical game that actually requires some thought being put into it.
Do you play Guild Wars and just spam skills to win at everything?
When I first played Mabinogi I got frustrated by it's difficulty but I never realized that there were many tricks and tips to make it easier (like turning off the freaking auto aim and such) until AFTER a few weeks and joining a guild.
Even then with the auto aim on and such I still managed to play it better than most newbs because I adapt a lot better as a gamer than most people (although truthfully told I was a awful trial and error gamer a decade back when I was a kid lol).
But by then I played the game on and off, mainly because there wasn't any other mmo at the time that was like it.
Oh, the latest version of Mabinogi was nerfed to your nooblet's desire btw... If you played sometimes before Chapter 4 came out, your combat has actual loading times and was not instant, and generation quests were actually harder.
