+1 totally agree these kinds of games are so much more fun to play with on joysticks/gamepads...hey have you tried joy2key? i haven't yet i was just curious i might give it a go
No all ive used so far is xpadder. but the problem is that because of the way the ships fly with a mouse it is difficulct to get it to work right with a joystick.
If they add joystick support, they'll need to completely revamp the controls. The game works flawlessy with mouse+keyboard, but it won't be the same with joystick/gamepad because of how the flying is made. Besides, if they add it and you use your gamepad, you'll be at a complete disadventage against those playing with m+k.

I know that you'll probably use the comparison with War Thunder (that has joystick support), but the flying mechanics are completely different, way on another league.

Give it a try and play a good number of hours, and you'll see how well it works as it is now.

i've found joy2key to be pretty nice sometimes...u can really fine tune the sensitivity of the analog sticks for mouse related tasks....deranzeef why would they need to revamp the controls? there really isn't that many commands that they couldn't map atleast the combat gamepad/joystick buttons
Because of how the aim and movement works and the fact that there are a lot of keys to use, I mean, I don't know a joystick with that number of buttons, do you? xD
i do actually lol but a gamepad wouldn't be too difficult i mean unless there are ships later in the game that require more than 8 buttons to fire weapons and use other ship devices i don't see why it wouldn't be possible...i've only played a bit so as of now i've got 2 weapons i can fire and 2 devices to trigger...could map movement to an analog stick pov to the other and use no more than 4 buttons for weapons and devices....a joystick might be harder but maybe a bit easier if you had a HOTAS system like a saitek X52 or something
Well, try to play a little bit more, you have 4 active modules, the 2 strafe buttons, one to go up and another to go down, you have another to accelerate and one to "brake", you have one to rotate right and other to rotate right -12 buttons as of now-, you have 4 kinds of locks (lock target in aim, lock any target, lock same target as ally, lock whoever is targeting you) and a "undo lock" (very VERY useful for surprise attacks) -17 buttons-, you have the afterburners, you have the main weapon and the missiles, you have the special module, you have the map (a fast one and a toggleable), you have the zoom in and zoom out, you have the "ship info" button in battle, and there are a couple more that I don't use at all, but if we count it all, I use actively 26 different keys, all the time xD
Another thing: I can't imagine how you'll dogfight, shooting and evading like crazy while flying at over 400 m/s with a joystick. I mean, this is like any shooter, and unless they simplify the controls and add an incredibly and ridiculously high auto-aim feature, the player with mouse+keyboard will always beat the joystick user. And if the devs make all that changes, they'll break the game for all the players that already know how to play, don't you forget there's people that is playing for over a year.

aim-bots are for cod weenies i still agree w/ OP this game screams for joystick play...if it makes you feel better game developers can incorperate support for such devices w/o having to completely kill the whole keyboard/mouse thing if that's what you prefer. but now i think i'm gona have to mess w/ joy2key a bit today just to prove that it can be done. aside from simple menu navigation i'm pretty sure i can manage the core gameplay with my logitech F310 which has 10 buttons ( or 16 if u count the d-pad and toggle switches) and thats weak compared to the 23 on the saitek hotas
Be my guest and use it as much as you want. Don't know which Tier you're flying, but I highly doubt you'll be able to hit a "good" pilot with a joystick. For T1 and T2 surely it'll be nice, I mean, it's the tutorial part of the game and most of the players fly in straight line to you.
For me i find it alot more intuitive using a joystick or gamepad, they managed it kind of well in world of warplanes. Plus my joystick has more than enough buttons for mapping the controls to. Furthermore i mapped an xbox 360 controller to the game a while ago and it worked perfectly, but its just the joystick didnt work as well as it could do
tbh i've only just started playing but i've played tom clancy's hawx for a while and a few other flight combat games....when ur running around in 3d space a joystick is a lot easier to move around than mouse/keyboard combo with the typical wasd because you're not standing on solid ground and can freely move in 4D so a joystick can really make a difference as far as maneuvering is concerned...other commands are really an issue of user preference but speaking from experience when you've got a game like this that takes advantage of several buttons it's generally easier on a gamepad/joystick if you don't have to move your fingers off movement keys to use a device or something like that

completely agree
While I agree with your statement of being comfortable (most of my life I've played with joysticks), you'll see that it won't work in this game. Trust me, I tried, but you can't achieve the same effectivity as with mouse+keyboard. And, you can't compare Hawx (one of the worst sims out there, far below the quality of Ace Combat and games like that) or any other streamlined plane sim with an spaceships one.

But, if you like the game, keep playing, and when you reach T3 tell me how well it goes with joystick.

And, as a matter of fact, the developers already stated that they won't add joystick support to the game, because it won't work with it, they already tried to code it and bla bla bla, there are posts from March, and even before that, but still, no joystick support, and I higly doubt they'll add it anytime soon, you can check the official forums if you like (both English and Russian one):

English: http://forum.star-conflict.com/
Russian: http://forum.star-conflict.ru/

As how the game is right now, you have 2 choices: Play it as it is, or play something else. I don't want to sound rude, and I apologize if I offend anyone, but it's the sad reality.

good to know i was starting to worry my rant was becomming incoherent haha...maybe the devs will take notice and we won't have to mess w/ things like j2k and xpadder which btw i'm not really familiar with but you mentioned having probs w/ the joystick not working right possibly joy2key may work better i know in the past i've been able to tweak sensitivity of mouse movement mapped to my analog sticks which is nice cuz you can really fine tune the speed at which the stick mimics mouse movement -cheers
