Defending Gains?
How do you guys defend your resource generating structures in this game (besides as Baron)?

In my initial few plays, I've left most of them undefended to keep my explore/attack stacks beefy, and occasionally I'll go back later to clean up independent units and recapture, but that seems really lazy and not entirely effective, as I often lose the best ones.

Lately I've tried to leave a few cheap units at anything of decent value (starting with anything that generates iron or 2+ gold), that's working out ok, but it's kind of annoying, and means I spend a lot of time going back to pick up more recruits. I use secondary commanders when I can, but those are hard to come by for some classes.

Any other ways to go, or any creative solutions?

The trick is the secondary commanders. Park them on un contested ground and periodically move them to recapture towns and farms. Mines have defensive bonus so you may consider growing garrisons there. Remember that a town which gives you 2 gold will take YEARS to repay for a lost archer squad so dont' bother defending places that dont have defnesive bonuses
