Starbound Archaeology 101
Creating this thread as a means of discussion about mysterious artifacts or relics. Purpose is to add on to or create more in depth lore for the game. -This thread may contain spoilers-

The current Wiki for Starbound planet descriptions:

"Planets are extraterrestrial, spherical, huge "rocks" which have a variety of features and inhabitants. In Starbound, these are practically worlds you can travel between in a Spaceship. Planets in Starbound are entirely procedurally generated and filled to the brim with unique content. Not only is the terrain of the planet procedurally generated, but also the weather, the gravity, the difficulty level, the plant life, the behavior and appearance of alien creatures, and much more. Some planets may have Fossils. Non-homeworld planets will most likely have "bookmarks" you can set."

Regarding Playable races:

Apex
Avian
Floran
Glitch
Human
Hylotl
Novakid

What have you found upon your journey so far? There is a magnifying glass in the UI you can use, which may give some clues. This is your area in which to post, thoerize, and suggest Starbound lore related ideas. I will try to update as discoveries progress. Thanks for your input!

Upon mining on some distant planet deep underground, I found something of interest. I forgot the planet's name and coordinates. Along with the statue and stone markers, there was a monolith with strange writing on it. Buried underneath the stone markers, there were other mysterious relics.

I discovered the parapet, and only the parapet, of a medieval style stone wall underground near the core of a planet. I couldn't find any hint at the origin. I wish I had taken a picture.

I was in a cave that had a couple of snake statues and a stone altar you could sleep on, but it in totally random places that didn't seem like it really meant anything unfortunately :|

So what we have so far, feel free to add your discoveries:

-Underground Dwellers-

Frog race -possibly merchant type culture, may be highly spiritual. Reside in temples

Snake/Serpent race -unknown

Midevil/ancient type race
-reside near a planet core, master builders in stone, race unknown

Rabbit race/Leporid species -relation to Avians -unknown

-Surface Dwellers-

Apex race -highly socialized and organized race. Primate in appearance. Will become hostile if attacked. Scientifically advanced with knowledge of metal, stone, and wood construction

Well when I was digging into an ice planet I cam across a very large opening, upon entering it was a huge cave and was filled with little houses just scattered all over the place with small light post's as well. It was certainly odd .

I'm particularly curious about the ship-like structures filled with crystals and inhabited by futuristic glitch. I can't shake the feeling that they're remnants of the Proginators of the Glitch.

I only had a silver pickaxe at the time, so it was a good find for me!

Quite interesting. It seems as though the Frog race are master craftsman as well, at least in metal sculpting and crafting. The stone structure doesn't appear to be too complex compaired to other races. The statue appears to be made of solid Copper or perhaps Bronze.

Through what we all have discovered so far...seems each species can talk in the same language. At least in the Alpha Sector. Maybe through discovery, one could eventually craft a "universal translate decoder" communication device before venturing into deep space or other sector's. One should know that not all species communicate in the same language. Some species communicate through sound, telepathy, or even light signals. Through archaeology, one can get a better understanding of a species. Intelligent or not (by human standards), all of them communicate.

Further analysis of discovered species such as the Apex, suggest that some could have the ability to eventually wage war. Maybe even on a player's homeworld. It is advisable to be careful when mining or "borrowing" artifacts, it may or may not have adverse affects. This is still uncomfirmed, but worth keeping in mind as we all venture forth into the unknown.

Very interesting. Simple things some species take for granted, others may find very appealing. The lawn chair maybe was taken by their leader in some battle. Maybe the lawn chair is actually a secret weapon or artifact that is cloaked to appear as if it is a chair.

This could be an intelligent species or most likely, a organism created by the planet's race. A simple (for the most part) solution for waste disposal. But..again, there is the possibility the "poop monsters" may have become intelligent. Hence the creation of their own biome?
