RaceRoom Experience vs Assetto Corsa ??
Sometimes it's disturbing to read reviews that obviously consist of hurt feelings (rather fancies) to exclude almost like a vendetta (of misidentification).
Why these constant comparisons and the associated bashing ?? This constant betting disputes about what or who is the best ?
I. Anyway, after a recent Super Christmas offer for AC 1.0 by Steam I ( a diehard RREfan) downloaded Assetto Corsa .
Well, yeah, I know now why AC is often given credit as a reference in Simracing : This small Sim-pearl looks very solid, tidy and clear with a nice menu navigation and many small and large features and configuration options that leave no wish unfulfilled. All that typical little things you actually know and expect from developers like Simbin/S3 have been implemented.
In a nutshell, what Kuno Simulazioni offers here is the type of Simracing Game which titles like Gran Tourismo, serious NfS sequels or Codemasters Grid / Race Driver games are mostly decorated with: I mean promises of "realism" but then again following only proven sales strategies to get the "mainstream-customer" eventually( CM is doing that for more than fifteen years and all fall back in regularly ): These are usually amateur pilots who desire to have great sense of achievement without spending too much time & effort - which I find understandable in these highspeed-multimedia-times.
Specifically, this means that Assetto Corsa has filled the gap here to develop a challenging racing game which combines high-quality simulation aspects and video game fun - and not so puristically/uncompromisingly designed for the kinda racing RRE has to offer.
With Assetto Corsa you'll get a real career mode as well as various individual events and challenges offered (as just in mainstream titles like Gran Tourismo) - which means you get a lot for just a "Straight Pound" (=german slang for 20€ Sheet. Original Prize is around 45 €) ...
Nor can it be denied that Kunos in terms of homogeneity and play efficiency, based on the development time has done the better job where you see that RRE is still struggling with beta mode. However, let`s not forget that Sector 3 (Ex-Simbin) had to endure a structural and financial crisis this year, which had certainly no positive effect whatsoever in terms of developing & processing Race Room Experience during that difficult period of time.
Btw.: I noticed that if you take a look at the old RRE base menu with Apex Hunt etc. apparently Simbin once had a very sophisticated, centralized simulation concept in mind and - due to lack of resonance / bad PR etc. pp. - have simply taken over .... at least this is my personal assumption.
However: After the first test kilometers it felt clear to me that Assetto Corsa always will be a decent alternative to just sim-drive around when I RRE has once again become too stressful ;) ... and which contains all that is missing in Simarcade titels like the ones I mentioned.
But do not be fooled by this assessment: AC IS a simulation and casual drivers will surely have to invest some effort to master their first clean laps without getting frustrated..
Here lies the main difference between the RRE and the AC-concept: AC beckons with its balanced and affordable "Simulation & Videogame Fun" concept certainly more mainstream players as Sector 3 with their (actually failed) "free-to-play -pay-game" (:)) .
But in terms of a puristic driving experience without much "fuss" RRE lies ahead - even physically. The physics of Assetto Corsa are excellent without question (specially for Noobs in Simracing), but the RRE cars give me a barely attainable sense of immersion, compactness, direct, uncompromising handling and a sound, that makes the racers heart and soul glowing.
While the physics differences between pure Racingcars in AC or RRE race I find far less dramatic than is often claimed by fans. In this context, I think the AC driving physics are neither better nor worse than that of RRE, but just ..uhm...DIFFERENT ! (In fact, I could switch from AC directly to the ♥♥♥♥♥y RRE Zakspeed Capri and found my performance even improved. Seems like one game supports the other which only can mean that the basic physics are on par... but feel DIFFERENT).
So its , like always , a matter of taste which you prefer.
GFX-wise the winner is (the DX11 based) Assetto Corsa. The cockpit, vehicle and driver animations are simply state-of-the-art and something I have, at least in Race Simulations, not previously seen.
But that does not mean that this is better or worse than the other.
I personally find AC almost too much in terms of eye candy. As many pimped Sim-Arcade titles are.
No need for this....
Especially since the performance under AC with a large grid(+20) is almost collapsing (half FPS) where under RRE with 24 cars the FPS rate does not even twitch.
All in all I just can state that here are two different concepts in the works, both of which have earned the full support of Racing Comunities, without limitation.
Even more , if Sector 3 were only to say goodbye to the much-criticized "free-to-play-but-not-as-you-think" concept ...
But let 's be honest as Simracers and customers :
THE best sim ever doesn't exist and never will, because that would be a balanced mix of the best features of all currently produced Racing Simulations.
II. Race Room Experience
If you are looking for a puristic, uncompromising Racing Experience and already getting used to Simbin/Sector3 products you won't be disappointed.
All in all in this state of development (still Beta) you`ve got to expect some minor and major bugs, but with every update the vast potential of R3E is coming to the surface. I wrote that Assetto Corsa lies (a bit) ahead Gfx-wise but with every new pack and upgrade added, RRE becomes the more promising alternative in terms of Immersion, sound, driving pleasure, detailed gfx and effects and racing action live with your friends or against a mostly briliant AI of course. Many fans of the ex-Simbin Series like RACE or GTR are still waiting for a GTR3 but I guess it's already there.
I definitely feel the legacy of former successful titles Sector3 created whenever I enter an R3E cockpit and forget about the world beneath the tarmac in front of me...just takes some more time for them to bring out the best.
And one little pearl I forgot to mention: Hillclimb !! Fans of Rallydriving (e.g.RBR) will definitely have much fun with it - as Hillclimb is continuously updated as well.
Pikes Peak some day ???
