[SOLVED] Not working on Windows 8
UPDATE: Screw GFWL and everything: unplug your XBOX controller before starting the game and everything automagically works. Go figure ...

Hi,
i am unable to run DS on Windows 8 64 bit. I tried the FAQs, but it didn't help. I don't want to mess with GFWL (latest version, btw) , as i barely managed to run Batman Arkham City, and don't want to have it stop working too.

The issue is: when i start the game (it happened the first time and every time since then), it starts in windowed mode, the GFWL overlay opens up asking me for the serial code, but as soon i click on the window or press a key on the keyboard, the window goes into "not responding" and - literally - stops responding.

Any help? If there are no options to have it working (again, don't tell me to tweak GFWL installation), can i ask for a refund from steam? Selling games that cannot run on Windows 8 is, by all effects, a scam, as the client is fully aware of the host OS and can prevent such purchases from happening.

Thanks,
Mauro

Hmm, you can go to the windows live site, login, and see if you can redeem the CD key there. It's not a windows 8 issue, it's GFWL. You said don't tell you to tweak it so I won't, but I would try inserting the code on their website.

steam gives refunds only on very special cases so no i doubt youll get a refund for this
as for gfwl
http://upwardgaming.com/windows-8-fix-dark-souls-crashing-on-startup-and-non-windows-8-fixes/
youll have to mess with gfwl sooner or alter if it isnt working properly
or try http://forums.xbox.com/gfw/technical_support/f/253/t/274625.aspx
or others said downloading and trying out microsoft flight helped

I applied another fix browsed through google, basically I uninstalled the Games for Windows apps and downloaded them directly from microsoft, it worked the next time, had to use an offline profile tho...

If the author of the FAQs is reading this, it may be worth updating with the solution found (applies to Win 8 64bit, latest version of GFWL as of jan 2013, no tweaks)

If you have GFWL installed (HOME button works in game) and you have logged in successfully to xbox.com with your login info and verified your email account and agreed to the EULA then GFWL games should work. If you still can't connect to an online GFWL account in game then your firewall software is probably blocking the game's internet access and you need to open it and make an exception for the game.

No John, the issue was completely diffetent. The game hangs if started with the XBOX controller plugged. Unplugging the controller, having the game bring up the GFWL overlay, and plugging the contrller back in solves the issue.

Strange. I'm glad you figured out the problem. It seems abnormal that a game would crash with an Xbox 360 controller since that's the only controller that Microsoft wants people to use.

If its a Microsoft brand controller then perhaps the crash issue could be solved by installing the Xbox 360 accessories software from here:
