There's an intermittent weird interaction between the Steam overlay and some graphics setups. We have tried to track it down but the results are inconsistent. For most people it works fine, for a few people it works sometimes, for a few people it takes screenshots but they're completely garbled and diagonally skewed, and for a few people it crashes.

There's a couple of topics on this in the old Steam forums - suggests trying to switch between fullscreen and windowed mode. You may also wish to try switching between GL and software mode in the graphics settings.

If that still isn't helping, any details you can add about what system you're using and what your graphics settings would be welcome!

There's also an internal screenshot command: pressing S (in most places; it's overridden when there's a text entry field up) will save a screenshot to the game directory.

Hm, I've had this problem...

Mine started with crashing when I'd attempt to take a screenshot (with F12).
After switching settings to GL it crashed.
I switched to Software Renderer and it did not crash, however none of my screenshots saved (though it seems to know I tried, as Magical Diary became selectable in upload screenshots, but there were no screenshots to select).
The only way I have managed to get around this (once so far) is to set it to GL, and then do the "alt+enter"x2 to go in and out of fullscreen prior to screenshot. I tried a second screenshot after the first and it crashed again. So it would appear I would need to come in and out of fullscreen prior to each screenshot. (Normally I play windowed but nothing I did got a screenshot in that mode.)

I have plenty of my own screenshots on my PC from using print-screen so it isn't a big deal, I just had hoped to share some nice Grabiner moment ones on Steam. :)
Oh well.

(For reference, my OS is Windows XP Home, SP3) GeForce 310.90 driver.

It's also possible to manually share screenshots by doing a bit of a hackaround - there's information on that in the CTHCC forum (their game won't work with the steam overlay at all)
