"-w 1440 -h 900"
...

I nearly typed in all combinations.
DirectX and ATI driver are up-to-date. Crash persists.

So you have updated your drivers? Somewhere on Steam, there is a download you can use to check for the latest drivers for your ATI Card. Well it was ATI before AMD took things over, but the utility still can be used to see if you indeed have the absolute latest. Could it be that your video card does not have an adequate level of Pixel and Vertex shading?

You did not mention what ATI card you had so its hard to tell what the problem might be without naming the card.
