Is there an activation limit?
Steam doesn't bother to even mention the CD Key thing on the store page, and after entering that serial number and activating the game with an internet connection, I'm left wondering if there's an activation limit or not. I really am tired of Steam not properly letting its users know about this crap before good money is spent.

The "Other Requirements:Broadband Internet connection" seems to be the new notification style of registration requirements. Which is stupid, it should be listed as DRM on the right side.

Unfortunately it seems that even that isn't a reliable indication, as there are many games without extra DRM that have "Broadband Internet connection" listed as a requirement. I really don't understand why Valve doesn't enforce this sort of thing. Why on earth would you want your customers to feel less confident when buying from you?

Once used, the CD key is no good anymore to install on another PC/reinstall. They email you an activation code once the CD key is used, but I have no idea the limitations on it. I am trying to find that out myself without just testing it on my laptop as well as pc as I don't want to 'waste' activations if it's a numbered thing. Support from the company has not replied to my quesion about it from a few days ago.

Had I known about the extra DRM, I wouldn't have bought it.

I got the Battle Vs Chess (Before it was changed to Check & Mate) and it's just activate when i enter the key. I get no activation code at all

On this one, I had to do a registration with the CD code, and then it emailed a different activation code to me. Once I tried to use the CD code that steam lists, it says that code is has been used/is invalid or something along those lines.

I will test the activation code on my laptop and hope that works the same way as yours. It it not very convenient that way, however, as you have to make sure you don't lose the email, etc. Just added headache for a game that is already on steam. Steam should be all the DRM you need. I buy games here so I don't have to keep track of codes and junk like that.

The Steam forums are down but I found this in the cache from back when this game was release a little bit ago:

Also I did see some reference to it having Games For Windows Live both in that forum thread cache linked below and on Get Games Go's website.

http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:ykRYGhVGnNMJ:forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php%3Ft%3D2904466+&cd=1&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=us

I'm putting this on here in the hope that I save some other schmuck from dropping $15 on this game. If you're reading this and and you are considering purchasing this title you should STOP right now, take this game out of your cart, and spend your money elsewhere.

As it stands, there are two major problems with this game:

1.) Oppressive hardware-based DRM
Check vs Mate/Battle vs Chess uses hardware based DRM similar to what Topware uses in Two Worlds. And as I recently found out, their DRM is VERY sensitive to hardware changes. Merely plugging/unplugging any external hardware uses up one activation. I have a pair of wireless headphones I use whenever the wife is asleep, and well, you can see where this is going. Support has also confirmed this in my email exchange with them, reproduced below:

Hello.

Please send us the activation code.
It's just numbers, no letters. 16 of them.
Thanks.

Constantly activation can happen inc ase you use external hardware.
The system may recognize that as hardware change.

The problem? The Steam version does not have the option to use a phone activation code. Activation is ONLINE ONLY. I've pointed this out to the support rep and have yet to receive a response. It has been over two days now - and I am still locked out of my $15 purchase.

Steam got enough complains about the DRM in Two World 2 and forced them to list their DRM properly on the storepage. Valve should have a standard for their store page.
Marioface5 Dec 7, 2012 @ 7:36pm
There definitely isn't hardware based DRM for this game. That's normally installed when doing the first time set-up, but the only thing this game required was the usual Direct X thing.

Thanks for the warnings, I'll keep my money. Especially as I very frequently change my hardware.
JRDeBo Dec 7, 2012 @ 9:43pm
Thanks for the heads up, I was planning on installing this when I got it, but I'm getting a new PC soon so I'll just hold off for now.
Any word on activation limit? Is there any?

(NO "i assume it's the same than Two World")

I wanna know if there's an activation limit for battle chess.)

Thanks for the warning. I was just about to purchase but I too buy games on Steam so I don't have to deal with other forms of DRM. Gonna pass on this one.

I can't even activate this game because it says there's an error in the connection when the connection is compelely fine. Wasted money on this piece of ♥♥♥♥.

I have this exact same problem. Anyone found a solution?

This game is on "SteamPlay", meaning it's available for both PC and Mac. I own both a PC and a Mac, so that is why I purchase SteamPlay titles- so I can enjoy them on either machine.

However, the serial key is valid only on one machine.

The DRM makes no sense on a Steam game. If it's on Steam, it's obviously a legitimate purchase. That's why most Steam games that have DRM in the retail versions have the DRM removed for the Steam version.

Also, there is clearly a language barrier.. the developers are German I believe, so they will not even read these forums.
