The inaugural F.E.A.R was amazing. Blending action FPS with a hint of Japanese supernatural horror, which was a winner in my view. But can F.E.A.R 3 keep up with the hype?
First of all, I never played F.E.A.R 2, but thanks to Google, I knew what happened as far as the plot is concerned. Gameplay wise, I would have to pass.
I would just concentrate on the horror aspect of the game, since the gameplay mechanics is pretty much the same, with the "bullet time" system taking center stage. On a short note, the cover system can be a nuisance sometimes. Though, the ability to play as Fettel is a nice addition. I would also like to note that I've played any of the multiplayer modes just yet, so I would have to pass.
This third installment tried to live up the standards as set in the first game, well it tried(with emphasis). The signature Alma scares which was omnipresent in the first game isn't up on par here. The scares were freaky at best, with little fright value as compared to the first game. Remember the part where Alma was waiting at the top of the ladder? Yeah, nothing like that here. Although the sense of vulnerability is still present, much thanks to the survival horror themed inventory system. As for the enemies, well, they are fairly challenging, especially those high up in the ranks. Boss fights are straightforward, so nothing big about that.
To sum it all up, F.E.A.R 3 doesn't live up to its expectation. The relatively short campaign is a turn off. Couple that with a rather awkward ending. I wouldn't recommend this game to anyone who's never played any F.E.A.R title just yet. As for those who follow the franchise, well try to keep your expectations low.
