What happens if you free him?
I was underway to doing so, already had found one of the switches... Then I read a plaque. Turns out he was a major ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, and his father the king probably wouldn't be actually that happy to have him released.

What happens if you do free him? Curiosity. I've already decided that I won't do it.

He will join you as an ally in a fight against several enemy lichs later.

You get a few extra skill points for freeing him, but considering it's basically at the end of the game, they don't really matter. It doesn't affect the main story at all.

There is no reason not to do it. It is literally only a good thing.

Some people still remember what does the RP part of "RPG" mean.

I was like you, read the plaque, and thought "oh this guy freaking DESERVES to rot for an eternity" so I let him. In another playthrough i set him free, got some XP, and lich joins me in a later fight... no downsides, which was great, still had a niggling doubt about it, though. It's a conscience call, nothing more.
I guess he suffered enough and deserves to be released for the final redemption.

Did you guys have problems with that fight? I thought it was very easy. But maybe the +14 damage to undead daggers had something to do with that :3

Just found out that he is a HERO in Might & Magic: Heroes VI. not sure if he is a good are bad "Hero". also i heard that Xana is a partner you get if you are play as a mage i think in VI....Anyways, i was dead set on not freeing him because, ya, he sounds like he deserves to rot in that hole forever, but i think if there are nothing but benefits ,.... I say go for it
