What's the best way to get this game playable?
I just remembered that this was part of a Humble Indie Bundle forever ago and finally redeemed my key. This game looks like it should be amazing when you get around the bugs, so I'm hoping that a year of it being "out" means people have recommendations on how to get it running best, even if not smoothly.

(That first paragraph's the important part, this next is just me describing the problems I've had in a short attempt to play, and is probably skippable)

Here's what my first attempt was like: I nearly quit right away because of the microscopic text that I couldn't get to go fullscreen. Thankfully, after a few pink screens and my computer freezing a couple times, I managed to get it fullscreen. I started up the tutorial, and got as far as it telling me to pick up a digger, but it didn't tell me how. I checked the key config, but only movement/switch keys were defined there. I wanted to try clicking it, but I had no cursor, so I had to rely on where my body was looking, but still had no success. While messing around, though, I found the right click menu and went to the buy screen. After I got out of that, I suddenly realized I had the digger in my hand now, but at that point the game stopped responding to all keyboard input. I could use the digger and pull up the right click menu, but that's all, not even escape. Luckily, returning to the buy menu restored keyboard functionality, so I exited the game.

Anyway, that's just to give some context. Really just looking for people's suggestions on getting it running right, so I've read that lots of people love the game, so there must be some way to get it working better.

Ah, so...I've dived into the forums more and I see now that this is a pretty normal situation. :( Gosh is it depressing in here. Well, if people still want to make suggestions, feel free, but I'll understand if it's just not going to work out...
It sounds like your game is working "just fine". Sometimes the escape key won't work until you have used one of the other keyboard inputs.

To pick up objects you need to hold the right mouse button and select the "pick up" command at the very top of the radial menu while standing close to the object. The radial menu is context sensitive and changes based on what is possible at the time. You can use it to reload, change weapons, enter an AI mode such as sentry mode, or enter the buy menu.

After you have begun to understand the controls I suggest playing the "Control Chip Hunt" activity a few times, which can be found within "Scenario Battle" on the main menu. The tutorial mission tends to be a bit too brutal for newbies, ironically. The Control Chip Hunt activity is slower paced and easier and should give you a better chance to learn the nuances of control and interaction.

Also, don't expect too much from the campaign mode. It's a heap of cold oatmeal, in my opinion. Just about everyone agrees that most the of the fun is dependent upon mods[forums.datarealms.com].
Ahh, these are exactly the nuggets of wisdom I was looking for, and more. Thanks! I'll give all that a whirl, and check out the mods. :)
Here are a few more tidbits of info that people usually stumble around for a while before discovering by accident: (quoted from what I posted in other threads)

me původně napsal:
(When using the buy menu.) You can choose the actors and how they're equipped by selecting the actors in the buy menu, and then selecting their equipment immediately afterwards.

Format is layed out like this example:
Actor 1 Weapon 1 Weapon 2 Digger Actor 2 Weapon 3 Weapon 4 Actor 3 Weapon 5 Weapon 6 Weapon 7

This would make Actor 1 be equipped with Weapons 1 and 2 and a digger. Actor 2 would be equipped with Weapons 3 and 4. Actor 3 would be equipped with Weapons 5, 6, and 7.

You can choose the method of delivery: Look for craft in the buy menu. Whatever craft you select will be the craft that delivers the stuff that you bought.

Yes, the interface is very amateurish and inconvenient. Just mess with it for a while.

And if you want to increase your gold funds on command:
me původně napsal:
There's another cheaty way: Change the buy value of an item to a negative number.
For example, go to .../Steam/steamapps/common/CortexCommand/Base.rte/Devices/Explosives/Explosives.ini
Find this part:
AddDevice = TDExplosive PresetName = Blue Bomb AddToGroup = Grenades ... ... ... ... GoldValue = 5 ...

Change GoldValue = 5 to a large negative number, like GoldValue = -5000.

When you need money just buy some blue bombs.

get the mods, then learn how to get them working together... profit?? its a stand alone game thats between 64-1 gig with mods, that can run off a usb drive. that's its charm.
This game doesn't work - it is fundamentally broken and has been completely abandoned by the dev despite the fact that he'll happily still take your money for it.

Enjoy.
Apart from occasional bugs and a ton of missing content that should probably be there, my game runs fundamentally fine. At least the modding community didn't abandon it like the dev. Not sure how active they are these days.
yeah the dev should release the source code for sure.

I'd like that. I wouldn't know what to do with it, and I wouldn't touch it, but I know that at least a few of the amazing modder kings and queens will scoop that stuff up like loose gold and turn it into something great.
Hell it'd help individuals for sure. Look at openxcom.
