Need for Speed
I find that the speed of cortex command varies greatly, sometimes it slows unbearably, does anyone know the best things to identity and quit on your system to help it run smoothly?

The game slows down if there are lots of particle, objects and stuff like that. Like, you know, massive multiple explosions or pressence of many units can slow down the game a lot. Also, some .lua scripted objects, such as conveyors, may slow down the game too.

Physics is the #1 consumer of your processing power with animation & AI following closely.
That said, try not to use things that ♥♥♥♥ terrain. Acid bombs and nukes are prime examples, that chainsaw launcher thing the ronin have may not be terribly beneficial to your performance either.

I often have to limit how big and complex I build my bunkers because I have a kind of crappy CPU & GPU. Thankful I can play the game on an okay framerate (20-33 roughly, when I don't go all-out) though.

Are there any setting that will help, do resolution settings make a difference? It would be nice to have the option to limits what troops, weapons, items could be used in a scenario.

Resolution always makes a difference since it reduces the amount of rendering your GPU has to go through, but it won't affect logic-related events like physics and scripts.
I run mine on 800x480. Anything much larger makes the UI too small for comfort and anything smaller gives me an unbearably low FOV.

Anyway, there is a file in your base folder that contains some options not accessible with the in-game options. The file is too complex to be explained by me, so I'll link you to a thread that'll help you optimize your game.
