The first thing you have to know about Magrunner:Dark Pulse is that it falls into the 'First person puzzle-platformer, with a twist' category that has become so popular since the release of Portal. I'm talkin' Antichamber, QUBE, Quantum Conundrum, Twin Sector... the list goes on. If you aren't a fan of that style of game, I doubt you'll enjoy this.
That being said, Magrunner is an extrodinarily impressive take on the puzzle genre. The core 5-10 hours of gameplay revolve around using a special glove to influence objects through magnetic-like properties. You have red and green charges (or red and blue if you choose). Same-charged objects attract, while different-colored objects repel. So basically the opposite of actual magnetism. Surprisingly, there are an impressive number of interesting, brain-busting puzzles you can create with this simple mechanic.
Beyond that, much like Portal, there's an overarching story that unfolds beyond the simple test chamber in which you begin your story. That's where the similarities to Portal start to decline, to its detriment. Whereas in Portal, humor and intrigue act in tandem between segments of puzzle-solving, Magrunner focuses primarily on intrigue through Lovecraftian horror, feeding you bits of the unfolding story while you work from one area to the next. While this could
work in a story with a number of twists and turns, the plot isn't that
deep, so it can be a little boring when you're working between sections of the game. The voice acting itself is a little flat at parts, and the music (if there was any) was so forgettable that I legitimately can't remember if there was
music. It also can be a bit buggy, such as when the final boss just stood there pointing at a block half-way through the battle, leaving me to wreck everything unopposed. Oh, and achievement hunters? Most of 'em are easy pickings, but there's one achievement that is REALLY hard to complete. You'll know it when you see it.
Point is, if you're a fan of the puzzle-platforming genre, and perhaps a fan of Lovecraft, you'll find quite a bit to enjoy about this game. I'd almost say grab it at full price, but maybe wait for a bit of a discount.
