-Buy for the experience, not for gameplay, not for story
I did not bother with the story. It appears you are just a pilot that is participating in a war and you act on mission objectives given, there is nothing more than that.
You control an array of planes depending on the given mission and you shoot down enemy units in a dog fight. You have 2 sets of weapons: The main gun and missiles. The main gun does consistent damage on the enemy while missiles does large amount of damage but needs time for them to reach their target. There are additional variations of weapons for the 2 main set of weapons. In my opinion, the weapon balance seems okay as every weapon has its pros and cons.
The controls are easy to learn but hard to master, easy in the sense where you can get used to the controls fast but difficult to completely avoid evenmy fire through evasive manuvures.
This game is playable with a mouse and keyboard. However, there is one major annoyance over the control is the fact that the mouse sensitivity of every machine you use is different, so everytime when i am required to use another plane in a new mission, the first thing i had to do is to go to the settings and adjust them. What should have been done was either to make sure that mouse sensitivity is consistent in every unit or make seperate options for each units.
Engaging in an epic fight in space was an awesome experience especially in the first 3 missions. In fact those were the best times i had in my entire playthorugh. I loved the shooting projectiles of the main gun, i loved the cluster missile movement and i loved how enemy interceptors get shot down.
Switching into strike mode is also amazing because they deal a ton of damage and the firing of rockets at multiple targets is very satisfying. The best part is that you can instantly dodge missiles and projectiles by just double tapping to do a short dash.
While i loved the experience of shooting down enemies, i really hated the mission layouts to the core. After enjoying sweet dog fighting in the first 3 missions, the rest of the game was essentially a speed run and I hate them in general. You have to complete your mission within a time limit before your capital ship explodes and you fail your mission. More than half of the play time clocked were spent retrying the mission only to fail again. I don't mind failing a mission because I got shot down, but failling a mission over something that you have little or no control over really pisses me off.
Another thing that I am extremely upset about is that the target system in this game is inflexible. They only target on the objective and completely ignores all other targets. This completely defeats the purpose of having ' target nearest enemy' button when it continues to target a carrrier miles away when I was flying right beside enemy torpedoes. Due to that, an attempt to even delay the destruction of the capital ship was impossible.
A game that was initially enjoyable suddenly became stressful and irritating to play to the point that I took months break twice from the game.
To me, the game experience is mixed, while I loved one thing, I hated other things even more. Therefore, I feel that this game worth nowhere near $20.
