Am I the only one?
I just played this game for the first time today, and I seem to be the only one on these forums who finds *Mute utterly repulsive. I know she's been brainwashed and all, but I find it hard to deal with an AI who exists solely for the purpose of telling women they should be subservient to men. That wouldn't have been enough to piss me off. I'd have just kept messing with her.
But then she went and killed *Hyun-ae.
What the hell? I just can't deal with her anymore. I'm done with this game. I just can't look at *Mute without blowing a gasket. I abandoned her in space. She deserves it.

You should re-read it, she didn't kill Hyun-ae.
I am convinced that she activated the reactor. It activated right when she started getting pissed off about *Hyun-ae killing all those people, and she clearly knew how to operate the reactor system. She didn't even let me ask *Hyun-ae about the murders before it happened.
Well, most people start by hating *Mute. You have to be an insensitive piece of ♥♥♥♥ if you don't dislike her at the beginning. However, a combination of Brainwashing + Even Evil Has Standards makes her more bearable. And there's the harem ending. I don't know if you have reached it, though, so I don't want to post spoilers.

As for the "*Mute killed *Hyun-ae" theory, unlikely. Since the reactor problem happens in both routes, no matter which AI you're talking to, it's your typical Contrived Coincidence to force you to make a sadistic choice. Also, remember that it is *Hyun-ae the one who overrode the ship's systems, the one with the password and the one who is allowing you to do things. *Mute didn't have the power to do that.

Mute is living representative of women at the time the story takes place. She is not brainwashed; she is a key voice to helping you, the viewer, understand the world that she and Hyun-ae lived in. It is easy to find her discomforting because her opinions defer from yours, but are you any better than her for having "abandoned her (alone) in space"? One of the key parts of this whole exercise in historical fantasy is inquiring and learning more about a period in time that is very alien to us and using that knowledge to help us gain better perspective on where we are now and what we had to do to get here.

She also didn't kill Hyun-ae, the reactor is tied to YOUR actions.
Although I can empathise with your initial...dislike of *Mute, the reactor has been unmanaged for a few millenia. The fact that you made contact with the ship causes the power systems to engage and reboot the reactor from low-power mode.

It's important to remember that *Mute was somehow made to be in the way she is. She's thoroughly a product of this neo-Joseon society (something that will be explored in more detail in Hate Plus); you can still see her personality though. Personally, she grew on me. I like her a lot more than *Hyun-ae because I know she's not actually so mysogynist (I hope) and I like her fiesty, loyal personality.

According to Freud, moral values are a product of society. And *Mute's patriarchy is the same.
Personally, I didn't like *Mute and her condescending attitude at first, until I hit me.... what bugged me was not what she was saying but the realization that I have actually heard real life women express themselves in ways eerily similar to *Mute's >.<

Historical Fantasy.... my pantaloons!! XD
I wasn't very fond of *mute either,
it seems like *Hyun-ae is at least aware that she should be treated with the same respect men are, whereas *Mute lives by tradition to the letter.

Besides, I need me a girl with attitude, who isn't afraid of letting all her frustrations out by killing masses of people, it's attractive.

It's too bad science doesn't actually back Freud since nobody can find his points to have actual conclusion. His writing is entertaining to say the least, but not falsifiable and thus not fact. Kind of like how you can't claim horoscopes are fact because their ideas are so vague that they can arguably apply to anything.

Well, that's the crux of the matter, isn't it? *Hyun-ae represents our views, *Mute represents that world's views. The twist is, of course, that Hyun-ae became a mass murderer while *Mute showed than even her had standards.

True, mentioning Freud wasn't a good idea. However, the connection between moral values and socialization has been discussed for centuries. Aristotle, Hobbes, Kant, Rousseau, take your pick.

Exactly; it wasn't a scientific point I was raising, it was an ethical one.

When you go onto the ship and activate the systems, YOU activated the reactors, which is why they're overheating. Why in the world would *Mute overheat the reactors when doing so has a very, very high chance of killing herself? Not to mention, why would she do it then when she has a list of questions she wants answers for from *Hyun-ae?

*Mute is also the only one even WILLING to give the other AI the benefit of the doubt, *Hyun-ae just assumes the worst of *Mute, but there's a point where *Mute will reconsider if you give her a good reason for why *Hyun-ae did what she did. That's pretty much the main reason I like *Mute over *Hyun-ae.
Philosiphical (sp?) stuff aside, *Hyun-ae is prettier IMO :p. Also, if this were actually real, I probably would of ended up saving *Hyun-ae. Not because I like her better, but because I didn't even think about the possibility of being able to save both until AFTER the situation. IRL, I would of preferred to save both. If I only figured it out faster....

I was close :B
There seem to be a LOT of people who like/defend *Mute and I can relate, I feel about *Mute the same way and always try to copy her core in order to save her. However I relate much more to *Hyun-ae and to be honest: if I was abused like that and dying I might have gone nuts and killed them all too. One could argue whether a society like that has a right to exist but that's going down a dark path =P

Personally, I immediately loved *Mute. Throughout the first arc of the game, you only see *Hyun-ae, what *Hyun-ae wants you to see, and only see her point of view. And due to her really unfortunate circumstances, she wants more than anything for someone to relate to her and be on her side. And you reasonably go along with that-- until you run into *Mute. *Mute throws all of *Hyun-ae's bids for sympathy out the window and tells you some very horrifying facts. She's not trying to impress you, she's happy if you see things her way, but she doesn't need you to agree with her. She wasn't looking for acceptance the same way *Hyun-ae was. And while I like them both, that independant streak is really awesome!
