I bought AVWW1 specifically because I found the mechanics in its current state appealing. In particular, AVWW has mouse+keyboard controls in the same manner as Abuse, Soldat, and Terraria, which is a scheme I love for platformers. AVWW2 replaces this with strict keyboard or gamepad controls. The drop from an "RPG" hitpont style to a metroidvania-style system is also counter to the original mechanics.

That said, I agree with their motivations. The current incarnation has too many disjoint mechanics, and adopted some of the worse RPG mechanics (grinding, in particular).

I'm hopeful that the new version of the game will fulfill the promise of the current game. If Arcen decides to abandon AVWW1, though, it would be nice if they'd release the code for the original game so that it could continue to evolve.

Man if they pull out the act raiser strategy aspect I'll love them to death for it. That was one of my favorite platformers. I also love the fact that they will be arranging slices together for the world generation rather than going fully random. This worked in diablo and a few rpgs I played so I appreciate that. I am very excited about the new direction they are taking as while I did like AVWW I did not like that there was no real reason to play with friends as you would be competing over the same resources. I also thought the mouse controls were a terrible aspect that also hurt gamepad users which ultimately is how I want to play a platforming game where I'm not creatively building stuff constantly like terreria. I agreed with all their points and I know me and my bro's who I've purchased AVWW for will be excited for this style.

What permadeath? There was no permadeath. Your hero died yeah, but it had no impact at all. You kep everything and did not have to start over either. So please, don't complain about "no permadeath" lol.

FYI, if you purchase this first game, AVWW 1, you get AVWW 2 for free. Based on http://www.arcengames.com/forums/index.php/topic,11943.0.html, they are aiming for a brief beta on November 30th, with release (v1.0) coming 2-3 weeks after the beta. AVWW 2 sounds really good, so I'm picking up AVWW 1, which is already a unique and, at the very least, decent game, and can't wait for AVWW 2.

This. I bought and played it when the former was in effect and I haven't played it since. However this news is very exciting. AVWW was one of those games that I commended for everything that was put at your finger tips but I certainly didn't have the patience to sift through it and didn't have much fun when i tried to(to be fair, i am lazy)

But,for a game I relegated maybe a hour to and didn't really like that much, I could always see a kernel of a great game when I played and I am honest to god interested to see the end product this time around.

Good luck guys, You were never that far off from where you needed to be and I respect the decision to just do the sequel instead. Better move long and short term, especially since we get the new one free.

Ummm your character died and didn't come back, LOL. You pick a new character. That's pretty much permadeath. Maybe you keep your set up but a new character, making it a half-permadeath. Personally I would rather have a more hardcore, official permadeath but people have weak stomachs for that sort of thing. The option for that would be nice.

What the... I didn't like the first one because it had extraordinary detail and potential for amazingly deep gameplay BUT it played like a simple internet flash game with grindy MMORPG elements to artificially extend the game. Now the second one will be even MORE streamlined and simplified?? Will it play more like a mobile phone game this time? I wanted it to be more deep complex and roguelike, but they are going in the opposite direction apparently. I don't even know how to respond to this. So much wasted potential?

Edit: I guess I need to see it for myself. Looking forward to the beta release so I can play it and have a better understanding.
