Should I play 1 first or can I skip to 2 or maybe both together?
I'm playing 1, but I'm not sure if the story is even important enough to have to finish it first before playing part 2. Do people usually beat the first one then play part 2 or are they different and not connected enough to play in any order?

The stories aren't really connected.

Ok, so would 2 be seen as just a variant of 1? Would it even matter if I played them out of order?

They're totally different games.

I personally think 1 is way better, in just about every single way. Especially the combat and character animations.

2 is much more of a strategy game.

Don't think it would matter at all playing them out of order. There really is zero story connection. I guess its technically the same universe, 1 is the year 888, 2 is the year 889 and both refer to a world ending event taking place... but theres no connecting threads.

Also I don't think 1 ever techincally ends.

No. 2 manages to look even more horrible than the first

Play the first and ignore the second. Trust me!

The first is way better

From what i have heard the first game's plot never ends, and the second one takes place 1 year later on a far away area comepletely disconnected from the places the first game takes place in.
Gameplay wise, the second game has a depper strategic aspect regarding the world map but i prefer the combat on the first one by far.

I like both, they are very different and both worth playing. Despite the 200 hours combined playtime, I really can't remember all that much story development in either. These aren't story-heavy games and although they seem to have a backstory, it's hard to follow, especially when told out of order as in the first game. It's much more focused on the environments and overall atmosphere.
2 is alot worse than the first imo. The levels get impossibly long after a while (when you have to take down the walls of towers), and the general gameplay is very punishing if you dont want to play the only few classes that are actually viable, because all the others are hard to get into at best, and useless nonetheless.
