game has gotten very elitist
i remeber purchasing the game a while back now, and whiel the community was small, i ever had a problem playing any role i wanted. now it seems every time i get in a game, i get yelled to play a certian class. now i understand the team needs balancing, but i miss the days where you could just play and not get yelled at. the comunity is starting to remind me alot of Dota. maybe its just my experience with players, who knows.

I understand what you mean but i dont think it actually is an issue.
Yes you cant play on a ship as second pilot or second gunner. But thats just cause it wont work with that.
But at the main hours that isnt even a problem ... There are several lobbies you can play in. There will always be one you can play your preferred role in. And even if you are an engineer there is in nearly every case a gungineer who will do a similiar thing a gunner would do.

Its just how things are supposed to work.
Cant use Dota as example cause im not used to that so i just take a similiar game where it is the same ...
In LOL you have defined roles which will be played in every game. A supporter and a AD Carry on one lane, a midlaner, a toplaner and a jungler. Those are the defined roles which just work best in the game. People are used to it. But in lol you have to start your matchmaking and get placed in a team where you have to play what is needed if you want a working team comb. In Goio you can simply decide to search a different game without a penalty and play the role you want.

And with the coming matchmaking feature where you decide beforehand which roles you want to play this will probably be no issue anymore.
The thing about hopping on a ship and playing what ever you want is it will usually gimp the build your captain has set up. Ships are set up by captains to do certain things, without crew that can do the required tasks for the ship build you're pretty screwed. So really it's in your best interested to go with the flow and just bring what's required. Let your captain know your strengths and you should end up at least close to where you wanted to be.

In the long run though if you're playing crew you should listen to your captain or move to another ship/lobby till you find a lobby with a newer captain who isn't worried about things like proper ship loadouts or winning. GoIO is a very team oriented game, you don't just ignore your captain.
This happend: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9rPBFynRpm4&feature=youtu.be

But I thought he kind of over reacted. It is not a matter of life and death, and starting a game and random people enter, you have to take this into consideration.
If you want to avoid random people, play with friends or a clan!
Well, this is a competitive PVP game, and in any such game there are some people who will take it WAY too seriously :)
Can't the captain of a ship forcibly kick people off of any guns/helm? Not sure why he didn't just do that.
Also, to the OP, it's usually not too bad as Mr. Macbain said in prime time. And if you really want to, you can always make your own lobby and wait as your role. Or even better, you can find friends or clan members and ask to play the class you want. It's just that in a random match, having 3 gunners or having multiple pilots makes the ship objectively weaker and usually less fun to play for everyone (too easy for enemy as well). While some nice players may switch roles to round out the team, it's hardly fair to expect that from all your random teammates, often those who have been waiting a decent amount of time to play that role by joining the lobby first.
It really depends on how reasonable they are. Telling me they need an engi is fine, but I hate when they tell me EXACTLY what my load out should be and EXACTLY what I should be doing every 5 seconds.

Being micromanaged in a video game, just painful and quickly destroys all fun for me.

It's much better to give a general outline of what you're going to need, and let your crew decide what's the best way to go about achieving it. Go play an RTS if you need to have direct control over everything.
If you can't stand to be told what to do don't play engineer.
Of course a pilot has to tell his crew what to do at any given time, especially so if crew is inexperienced. I'll tell you to spray the balloon if I'm going close to a flamethower, I'll you to buff my main engine when I want to rush to a position through a cloud and remain hidden, I'll tell you to jump off the gun and assist in repairs if I'm trying to escape a fight and gain a few more seconds of life, and I am going to get mad if you don't do it. That's how the game works, the pilot controls the flow of the battle and the crew is there to make sure his plan works.

I get what you're saying, but here's the thing, the captains have built their ship around certain guns and stratagies, and those stratagies require certain loadouts. If you do not bring that loadout, you WILL gimp your ship and likely lose.

For example, if you're on a Pyramidion and the captain tells you to go main engineer (hull and engines) with spanner/mallet/chem it's because he is counting on you to do your job while the others maintain the balloon and shoot. If you bring an extinguisher over chem, you will not have sufficient control over fire and will be burned to death. If you bring pipewrench/buffhammer you cannot keep the hull up and will get killed easily.

If someone is telling you to bring something, 99% of the time there is a reason for it. And 99% of the time the reason is because it works the best with the guns/ship. This is a TEAM game. And the whole team has to be on the same page. In addition, ships function best when the engineers DO NOT overlap. Meaning one guy watches one thing and the other guy the other. Less running around, less panic, less confusion, more working ship parts.

Also, if you are going for certain achievements or something let the cpatain know and they will likely assign you to something that fits with your goal.

In other words, the captain is trying to get everyone to work together in the best way possible. That means giving directions and orders. And that is exactly what they are, they are not personal attacks, they are not telling you what to do because they are on a power trip, they are simply trying to organize things.

Also, not to be a ♥♥♥♥, but the idea that "It's much better to give a general outline of what you're going to need, and let your crew decide what's the best way to go about achieving it." is a very quick way to lose. It's why random players who do just that will get roflstomped 5 - 0 against an organized crew. I see it all the time.

EDIT

Also, part of the problem is that gunners are usually not neccesary. Only a few guns require more than one special and default ammo. Engineers can shoot guns, and they can bring special ammo, they can also deal with fire, repair, and buff. Overall engineers are currently a lot more useful.

A lot of people pick gunner without fully realizing that they still man the weapons as an engineer. This leads to a lot of ignorant people having to be told to go engineer. Which leads to them getting angry about being told what to do because they don't understand how niche gunner is. It's not their fault, it's just the way the classes work atm.

Regardless of any valid justifications, he made a crystal clear point and a valid problem in EVERY team-based oriented activity: YOU HAVE TO RELY ON OTHER PEOPLE.

This is quite uncommon in the gaming scene. Most introverts such as myself (to a certain limit) prefer some alone time, playing online with other people yet not depending on them as much as I depend on others in real life. (that's just a hypothetical statement, since I actually love me some socialization).
Hell, games as The Sims 3 exist because the usual gamers want to play "family"; a REAL family is a hassle, so we're better of just playing a game about making a family alone, without any help or interruption. When gamers are "forced" into teamwork when they, in effect, have little to no ♠♠♠♠ing clue on the meaning of that word, they get pretty p♠♠♠ed off about it and over react.
By watching the video, I only see an incompetent captain that can't even pronounce MERCURY Gun correctly and a newbie that doesn't know his a♠♠ from a hole in the ground (which is a must to every single one of us in every single game that we start playing).
I mean for crying out loud, that "captain's" first two lines were "get off tht moehannhinngritenao", "getuff dat thngdygannhinnng". Not even Charlie Brown's teachers would've figured that out.

Here's where the TEAM-work part kicks in: the captain must bring the crew together, not bash them inside out of their eardrums just because they don't fully grasp the general idea of how the game works. Instead of an actual captain you have a jacka♠♠ who can't really manage a crew, and takes out his frustration on the newbie.

This is OPs point, and regardless of how you want to shield it in the "oh you must micromanage" card, it's fairly obvious that some people really can't team-work and instead wish to enforce their gameplay rules because "f♠♠♠ it I'm the captain".
I disagree on the "elitism" part. It's just the usual teenage gamer douchebag behavior that you see in many other games, both individual or team-work based.

Thankfully, I haven't had this issue before. I've gotten trolls on my ship (and idk how to get them out of my ship). However, never had a newbie that can't be guided to a certain extent of efficiency or a dips♠♠♠ captain as the one in youtube.

TL;DR: OP is not what OPs usually are in other forums, he made a valid point, it's not "elitism", it's the gamer's douchebag behavior that's often common. Vid clearly depicts a douchebag captain and a newbie fresh out of the new summer collection.
Sorry about the long post

D*uchebags like you makes me think sometime why should I even bother communicating, since a lot of people start insulting my english if i mispronounce one word. Like seriously!? One would think people would appreciate that non native english speakers are at least trying to speak english as best as they can, because you also have people that won't give a rats ass about english and will just reply to you with "♥♥♥♥ you" in their language. Maybe you prefer those?
And just an interesting observation: I've played gw2 for about a year and half, I was part of about 10 clans, I met bunch of native english spreakers and I don't remember anyone insulting my english and gw2 has quite toxic community in general, while in GOI I got quite a few "What's this language?" "Are you speaking english dude?" etc etc. and my english is really not bad. It's not great, but it's most certainly not bad.

EDIT: I'm not the captain in the video in case anyone would think..

I'm not insulting your english. I'm pointing out your inability to properly use your language in order to successfully communicate. It's not language: it's how you apply it. You COMPLETELY missed the point because of some personal insecurity about how you pronounce your words. It's not the pronounciation or your english: it's your lack of proper communication. You can be William f♠♠♠n' Shakespeare for all I give a rats ♠♠♠; if you can't apply your vocabulary in an clear manner, you fail (and I don't men "clear" as well-spoken). Pronounciation or accent is not a role that plays in this.

Just today I was playing with this indian dude with a really thick accent. Mind you that I am not a native US citizen and my accent is also a mix of various places, so it's not perfect either. The indian dude was clearly a newbie and had some issues with the Mercury/Flak setup on the Pyramid Head. I did get upset obviously because the dude was missing shots and because he clearly thought this had the same bullet physics as CoD or a game without bullet physics at all.
After several tries, I ended up telling him: "dude, you need to aim depending on the distance". He said some strange stuff and finally saying "ok" (i still think he was saying something like "ahiseeididntrealize..ok" yet he kept missing.
I then told him "ok dude remember that the bullet is shot, it'll slowly go down. Kinda like gravity: when you throw a baseball, you throw it upwards" but he kept missing. I tried 12 other ways to explain him until he understood. I did feel like a bad person for trying to dumb down the explanation to ridiculous levels so whenever he failed I said "you're doing better, try to aim a little higher next time" and I did my best to not sound upset at him.
After several other tries he understood and once he understood, he rekct those guys mercilessly.

If I followed your action plan, I would've instead just got pissed, said some poorly elaborated words because of my inability to understand other people's language barriers, then throw a sissy fit and crash my ship into the opposing teams turf.
And it doesn't matter if whether you were the official captain: you were acting as the leader in there, giving orders (as utterly incompetent as they were).

See where the difference of action lies?

So instead of throwing your panties at me because I didn't butt-kiss your lackluster communication with people who are yet to understand the game, I will quote:

and I'm still confidently sure there isn't a newbie in this game or any other game that can't be guided to a certain level of efficiency IF (however) you push the right buttons.
Clearly you didn't, you failed, and you got rekt. It's not GoIOs fault, it's not necessarily your fault but you need to work on it if you want your team to at least survive a good amount of damage and time in a ship. Stop throwing sissy fits if the team does not do what you want to do EXACTLY. There is always another way, specially if there's team work involved.
Learn this and you will contribute in the prevention of people considering this game full of "elitists" Dbags.
And I would certainly appreciate it if you do.

You obviously didn't read my post. You keep wording your sentences like I was that captain in the video or I was playing with you/against you before, which didn't happen. I have never played a match with you and I wasn't a captain in that video. I was just saying that you're douchie for insulting that captain's "mercury" pronouncing. I doubt that he pronounced "mercury" incorrectly on purpose.
Also you put the whole story on how you helped some dude and idk why, because I didn't say anything about you not helping newbies or smth. Only thing I mentioned was your rude comment on that guy's pronunciation. I'm not defending that captain in the video, I'm just saying that "your english is bad" or "you can't even pronounce" like comments are very lame and I'll never have respect for players with such attitude, no matter how good they are.

Lol, well I'm sorry but this sentence of yours --> "By watching the video, I only see an incompetent captain that !! can't even pronounce MERCURY Gun correctly !!..."
if we look at last part, which doesn't have to do anything with how good his orders are or like you said "inability to properly use language in order to succesfully communicate". The way he pronounce "Mercury" doesn't have to do anything with how good his "commanding skills" are.
You can say his commanding was poor, but by saying "can't even pronounce mercury correctly"... that's nothing but an insult.

EDIT: Also, again not defending captain in video, he could do better job, but he did say "Get off the mercury gun" which means whoever is on mercury should get off. Do you really need to hear your name that you'll know it's you who has to get off?

So you're still going on a tangent and focus the whole text as a personal attack?
Let me go ahead and try to re-emphasize: He couldn't even pronounce the word MERCURY correctly, he didn't even communicate anything! Again. That IS NOT yours or his english, that's all about your communicative skills. Hence my example of the earlier match (or matches, we lost a few ships in hopes of getting the dude to no scope like a pro).

Let me go back on track because obviously you still want to focus the conversation on YOU exclusively:
The OP says this game has gone elitist because people tend to scream at others without any real valid reason. I said it's true because exactly like in the video, that is what happened, and I set that up as the perfect example of not precisely elitism, but overal childish behavior in games, specially the ones that require teamwork (which weren't so common before but are now).

If you think I was exclusively insulting you for your english then OK, please go cry me a river. As to your "I wasn't a captain in that video".. I see, you were just defending the a♠♠hole. My apologies for the confusion.

I never had elitists who don't want guys in their team because they are low leveld, as a matter of fact insofar as personal experience in the game, barely few people have been getting upset at new players or slow learners. It's just a matter of setting a precedent.
Sure, there might be a few elitist players who really act like thei're having their girlfriends' period, but that happens in all games and it goes into a minority so the OP shouldn't be really talking about elitists, just trolls and impatient manchildren.
At least I hope so, I said the same thing about Dota and look how it ended :(

So please let me re-re-emphasize: I don't care about your english, I don't care about your pronounciation, it's how you apply it, as lacking as it may be. You may have bad english but if you're good at communicating your ideas, you can still do good.

NOW do you understand? Can you please get over that part and focus on the on-topic area?
