It has a small community, but that community is very dedicated, and there is a very big update in the works that will likely boost the playerbase a lot
The gameplay is very much a love-or-hate thing, I'm personally on the "love" side, but I can totally understand the alternative perspective.
I'd recommend looking up a few videos of gameplay in the different roles (pilot, gunner, engineer), preferably across at least a couple of different ships. Don't take any one person's word. The game is well-built, and does what it does incredibly well.
The big thing about the game is that communication and teamwork are FAR more important than in any other game I've played. You don't necessarily need to know anyone who plays, because most people will communicate to some degree. Some people use text chat, but a lot of the time, you'll have people using the in-game presets with character voices being used, or players using the (excellent) in-game voice chat. It's rare for me to play with randoms and NOT have at least one other player on mic. And when I do, there's almost always someone using the chat presets to "speak".
