It's a good game. First few hours are boooring. Boring as in staring at a white wall for 3 hours. But after Chapter II, things start to pick up.
The good parts is that it has a solid story, but is no means memorable. Its like watching a B-Grade movie, so don't expect a story that will make you feel like watching a Christpher Nolan movie (Momento, anyone?), or a game made by Ken Levine (Bioshock series). Combat is weird at first, but you get accustomed to it, and when you do, it becomes enjoyable.
Characters are memorable, really the part where it stands out from other RPGs. I never really liked Mass Effect series (I found it boring, the characters were dull, the missions were duller, and the only thing good from it was that Shepard was a BADASS, and that it was the best place for watching women in tight rubber clothing shoot aliens.). IN MY OPINION (on the internet, you have to write it in capital letters), I found The Witcher as a more enjoyable RPG.
No game is without its weak parts, and the bad part about The Witcher is that permanent weapon upgrades are useless, crafting your own rune sword was a useless mechanism, since you are going to get a sword which is much better due to storyline. Its a hampering prospect, but it does not affect much of the enjoyment of the game.
The combat isn't for anyone, and I'd say the combat in the Witcher 2 is more superior for the vast majority of people.
The game looks old now. Just pointing it out. It is a 2007 game.
A mission in Chapter V is just downright annoying (The Flame That Cleanses)
In conclusion, The Witcher is a very good game, except for some mechanics that are sometimes annoying, and its combat isn't for anyone. Honestly, if you like looting and killing, I'd suggest Diablo or Skyrim. Weapons literally come out of your ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. But if you liked Mass Effect, Dragon Age, a lot of old-school RPGs that had good storyline, or you just want a good story-driven RPG that wasn't made by Bioware, buy this game. Endure the first 2 chapters of being a walking simulator, and enjoy Chapter III and beyond.
