I too found it to be very confusing at the beginning of the game, but after a while got used to it. The trick is to not "button mash", but follow the right rhythm to deliver blows.
it took a while to get used to, but i've mostly got it down now. I havn't started oiling my swords yet though. and i keep forgetting to drink the swallow potion BEFORE combat.

This is why I prefer this combat style to generic button mashing like Skyrim for instance. Love TES games to death, but my god, the melee combat bores me to tears. At least in TW you're always on your toes when fighting. It can be pretty clunky though. TW2 combat was a big improvement (in my opinion).
Yea, I kept starting up the game, playing through first few hours then uninstalling it and after a few play attempts like that I just read the books instead. Thought I'd grin through the game just so I wouldn't be lost in Witcher 2's story, but the books paint a clear picture on who Geralt is and the world he's in, then I wikipedia'd the Witcher 1's story and went straight to WItcher 2. Love the lore and mythos of Witcher stuff, just can't stand the gameplay of first game.

There's a mod called Full Combat Rebalance on moddb which is highly recommended.

Initial combat is very confusing (and boring) and takes practise to get used to. However, as the story goes, sword skills improve as you distribute talents (on combat styles) and Geralt performes nice sword play, thus making combat more attractive.
Finally, I had the same feeling at the beginning: boring cr4p, stupid combat mechanics, etc and I wanted to uninstall the effin' game, but I gave it a 2nd chance and am now actually loving it.

Give it a chance ;)
