I'd say start from the beginning, but it does require a fair investment of time. If you skip to the later games, you'll be missing some stuff but won't feel alienated. And since the later games are replayable as well, you could just play them and then do the entire series, if you're eager to play the later ones earlier.

I do recommend the "Rise of the white wolf" mod, (among a few others), to enhance gameplay.

The key is the timing, don't click again too early or too late, this will cause Gerralt to stop his attack and then you must start it again, waisting time and opening up to attack.
This was very confusing to me early on and very frustrating as a result. Once you get the hang of it, its a breeze to take down ten drowners all at once.
