Does the game contain any spoilers for newcomers to the franchise?
So basically what the title says, are there any major or minor spoilers to the story of the books resp. the series? I haven't yet gotten into it but I will in the near future and while also being very intersted in this game I was just wondering if it'll give away anything before I get to read the books or watch the show...

Or is it even vice versa that I won't understand much of the game's story if I don't know anything about the books and the series?

Thanks for any help :)

Well, yes, it could be hard to get the point of the plot if you didn't read the books. Some tips here:

1. Game takes place in the Westeros kingdom just after the Robert's rebellion is finished. Book plot starts some years after the game.
Anyway, Robert Baratheon is a king now, with the Cercei Lannister as a queen. You're going to play as two heroes, bot of them were Lannister-allied land lords once.
2. In the books there is a mystery who killed the Targaryen kids, so the game offers a complete vision on that with people's reaction. Greatly extends the lore.
3. Mors parts are a lot more understandable if you get the DLC 'Beyond the Wall' or something like that.

Enjoy your stay.

Alright, thanks for the extensive info, I think maybe I'll start off with the book then... Or even do all three parallelly xD

That is the best way, I think. I've started learning about the series from books myself.

From what I understand the timeline goes from post rebellion -> present: between a week to a month before the events in the first book Game of Thrones begin.

I'm starting to wonder if anyone who actually has read Game of Thrones finished the game. The games plot finishes at the end of the first book, or after episode 9 in the series. So yes, the game does involve some mentions of the plot from Season 1/ the first book. I know this is late but christ.

I'm 200 pages into the first book, can I play the game and still enjoy it without getting spoilers etc?

No.

This game ties in directly with the hbo series and it spoils a lot. A LOT.

The game spoils a lot of events from the first book/first series of the show but it ends before the ending of the first book so it doesn't spoil anything beyond that.
