The storyline?
I know people say this game is best played for the storyline. I have read some threads about this however have not found one that may be compared to another storyline from other games.

I do own the game however I have only played to the point just after the funeral of the red priests father and tracking down an enemy with the dog, basically I never got any further than the beginning as playing as the dog really put me off :p

My first question is this. I can put up with the battle system and the graphics however how often must I play as the dog as I hated doing that even for the brief time I did it for.

My second question is this. I loved the story in Dragon Age, that is what kept me battling through with the same combat system. The betrayal from Loghain and the impending war was excellent and brilliantly written in my opinion. Is the story in Game of Thrones in any way similar to this?

If the answer to the first question is 'not much' and the answer to the second is ' very similar' or 'much better' I will give this game another try.

I tried to play as an archer with the red priest but it was pointless as I never found a vantage point to shoot from and the enemies were hitting me with their swords before I fired the third arrow. I normally like to play as an archer however it seemed pointless in this game especially since the game blocks you from moving too far with the hidden walls during battle.

I will finish by saying I am a huge fan of playing games for the story my first playthrough, I normally play most RPGs on easy the first time just to see the plotline then move the difficulty up if I think it is worth a second playthrough. Anything else in RPGs can be anything from at the very least average but I do like the storyline to be top notch (Kingdoms of Amalur being an exception due to the battling system being much better than the average storyline).

Thank you in advance.

I've never played Dragon Age but Game of Thrones has one of the best stories of any games I've played. On the archer thing: It doesn't matter if the enemies get in close to you: The bow works just as effectively at point blank range as it does far away. You don't need to change away from the bow to a sword when enemies get in close. It's not realistic, but it's not supposed to be. On the other hand as you level up the archer skill tree has abilities specifically for keeping enemies away from you (and they will be needed). You get paralysing powder that stops enemies moving for a few seconds, an ability to knock individual enemies to the ground and an ability to shoot an explosive arrow that stuns all enemies in an area. With these (and the occasional drink of water to keep your energy up) you should be able to keep enemies away from you while you perforate them.

Have you watched the show? Then you know what to expect, lots of unexpected turns, lots of political intruigue. The only game I'd compare it to in terms of the quality of the storytelling would be "The Witcher 2".

Yeah, the story definitely has the grim feel of the books/show.

I think the best part of the story is getting to play two characters. Although it is a bit jarring whenever the game switches, you can play the two completely differently. I'm playing Mors as a complete ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ and other as someone who tries to make the most "moral" choices. You also get to try out two different fighting styles.

The combat really isn't bad when you get used to combining the status effects with extra damage attacks and getting the interupts right.

If you like the story, play through the side quests. They are often interesting little vignettes with little twists and your decisions make them play out very differently.

I actually found Dragon Age's story really boring for some. It just seemed like way to generic of a fantasy. I probably didn't give it a good enough chance though.
