not much help sadly, just eliminating variables by pointing out it's not the specific combination.
had this issue once. recalibrated the gamepad and reset the controls in game. no problem since.
That's why it does not work.
Does it work in other games?
I'm not sure what the differences are with Windows 8, does it still support Direct Input?
http://gamedev.stackexchange.com/questions/55955/why-directinput-is-not-recommended
DI is deprecated and should not be used anymore sh0v0r. In all seriousness, get rid of it.
It sits on top of the Windows API and does not really provide any significant improvement over using raw messages. And you have to deal with lost devices and other crap.
Also I just remembered my fondness for cheap stuff on eBay. I might be using bootlegged gear, although it happily accepts the official MS drivers.
Are they 'Offical MS Controllers' ? What operating system are you using?
The Mac build requires the tattie bogle driver: http://tattiebogle.net/index.php/ProjectRoot/Xbox360Controller/OsxDriver
If its not being detected trying click 'Reset To Defaults' in the controls menu. Once you do this you should get a prompt asking if you are using the X360 controller.
Have you tried pressing the reset to defaults button in the options menu?
The problem yesterday when I tried was that all I could find was the "settings" menu. I had to disable extended mode (-adapter 1) and view the game on the main monitor. There it was, right between my eyeballs the whole time.
