Scheduled Playtimes, I Need Your Help...
I'm sure you've gone to try the Multiplayer only to find there aren't any servers, so you start your own but no one joins. Depressing I know... if we don't keep the ball rolling the Multiplayer will fail into obscurity and I will cry and maybe you will too?

Lunar Flight was developed mostly by one guy (me) with limited resources, I can't afford to pay for dedicated server hosting and I have a basic ADSL2 connection with limited 80kbyte a sec up stream. I should also add that there is no dedicated server version and any server will need to be able to run the game.

So I'm proposing we schedule times for people to play and volunteers to host servers to help foster a community of regulars. It would be great if we could get people from most major regions to contribute so that there is atleast one server available at all times.

I know a few of you guys have been leaving your server up and thankyou for making an effort to keep a server active so new players can try the multiplayer.

I will have a server up most of the time now running on my iMac build machine. I will attempt to play for an hour or so each week day around 1PM Eastern Australian Time on this server if you want to come and take me on. >:)

When you host your server please add a region ID to your server name e.g. I will have Shovsoft Server AU

If you want people to be able to see your servers Ping time you will need to make sure you allow external machines to Ping your modem.

So if you can spare your machine for a few hours a day and want to help out, I can't really offer you any thing other than my gratitiude and the promise that if the community gets behind the game and keeps it alive I will be able to continue to support it in future.

Thanks Shov! I would be willing to help out but what kind of rig do you need to have a server? Mines not very powerful so...

Lunar Flight is not very demanding, I run my iMac with it set to 1024x768 in Lowest detail just to ensure it has as much resources as possible. I have it set to 16 players, but I've never seen more than 8 in a server yet. I released an update today that fixed a very big performance cost for each client so things should in general run much smoother on everyones server by a significant amount.

Each client when spawned is sending about 2.6 kilobytes a second. With 16 players this equals about 42k a second flowing through the server and back out. In most cases I wouldn't expect to see more than 8 players as it gets too crowded. So its not a lot of data at all and the processing of each client is also very small.

@sh0v0r I will set up a server in Denmark between 07:00-13:00 Danish time : http://wwp.greenwichmeantime.com/time-zone/europe/european-union/denmark/

I will call the server Danish Lunar Flight Server DK.
Im on a 60 Mbit Line with relatively low ping, im guessing you will have a ping around 200-400Ms from Australia :)
Let me know if you want me to do this, if you wont use the server, please let me know when you see this message.
Also if theres a time that fits you, tell me what time itll be in Denmark and ill try to be online at that time :)

Said it before and ill say it again: Keep up the awesome work you do! :)

I will try to leave a server up most overnights - roughly 11pm - 6am Pacific Time.
...and when I'm playing in the day if I'm not on someone else's server

So you say there is no dedicated server? That is bad. I play a lot of other games and have to study too and as my laptop's VGA is very weak, running server in main game window will make me able to do nothing else while server is up.
However, if you will make dedicated server with some GUI for chat and ban/kick players, a lot more people will actually help and even i will try to help (i have been hosting dedicated server for minecraft for my friends with no problems).
Please reply what do you think about it.

If you dont know how to make dedicated server, then try to copy you Lunar flight project folder and simply get rid of all unnecessary code.

If only it was that simple...

well, i dont think it is that hard. i am a programmer myself and i programmed multiplayer in one of my project.
Another solution - add "Dont render world" flag. This will temporarily do as a dedicated server

No body said it isn't possible, you're making big assumptions about what it would take to make it happen that is all. :)

You have already created wonderful but complicated game, i dont think creating dedicated server will be as hard as everything done before at once.
And what about "no world render" option?

It's not that simple, there are a lot of other configurations things I would have to do, its not really a matter of how difficult it is but more a matter of the amount of time it would take. I am about to move onto Oculus Rift integration next. So there wont be anymore MP work for a couple months until that is done.

then dont expect much servers online. most of games have dedicated servers allowing everyone to contribute to server list without eating all PC resources. i cannot host then.

Most games aren't made by one guy alone trying to do a million other things to keep people like you happy.

I will buy a new PC and then host. But later.
CatBox May 31, 2013 @ 2:41pm
I will host weekdays between 12:00 PM and 5:00 PM Eastern
