why it doesnt work for you guys....
ok, i see alot of "help" and "crash" threads.... so i decided to make this thread to explain to you why it doesnt work..... it doesnt work on windows 8 and above..... sure, some may say it does, but trust me it doesnt!

i got disk version, i have windows first it didnt get to title screen....i toggled around and got it up to character creation....then as it starts it crashes and doesnt work at all.... then i read online that its not compatible with windows 8..... im not sure about 7 but i heard it also has problems on 7.... it works well on any windows below 7 though!

and yes, i installed the lost content things and the compatibility mods that supposedly fix the game and used service packs and changed settings before start up and used admin mode and did the change in the files with vortex thingy and added/changed the other files suggested on sites..... nothing works.....because its not compatible with windows 8.... maybe even 7 and above..... so thats your problem guys, you just need to downgrade to XP instead LOL :P

It doesn't have support for anything above XP but it is possible to get it to run on windows 8.

I have windows 8.1 and it works just fine. It's always been a somewhat buggy game however. But it works.

So since I actually use XP I won't encounter the crashes or resolution problems?
blinky Nov 30, 2013 @ 8:14am
The resolution problems aren't really problems, its just that some people want the game to run in widescreen when it wasn't made to. If you don't mind the game running in 4:3 then you won't have to change anything. If you want to run it in 16:9 you'll have to download a fix for that.

Ok thank you for the speedy response!

I think most of the crashes are caused by the videos in the game. The only problems I had were in cutscenes. I fixed KotOR 1 crashing as soon as it started on Windows 7 by deleting the 3 intro videos found in the game files. Any problems I had during cutscenes were fixed by Alt + Tabbing several times.

I had a W8 PC and KotOr 2 ran without problems.

Instead of seeing those 'help' and 'crash' threads... READ THEM... ;)

And enjoy your fully functional game afterwards...

i did all the fixes i could...... like getting rid of videos by disabling them, changing values in settings, downloading custom patches that people said would make it work, doing everything possible (i have disk version if that makes it worse) it simply doesnt wotk on W8.... (dont have 8.1 so i cant say anything about that) the fixes did get me as far as character creations and a tiny bit in the game, then didnt work.

and as for KOTOR 1 i got that working after alot of troubling around and it works better than KOTOR 2 but i got just past the ranchor boss and now that game doesnt work without crashing every second. so all in all the kotor games are quite unplayable on win 8

Installing older pc games from the original disks on newer operating systems usually causes one problem or another-- they simply weren't made for it. Steam makes it easy for you because you just download it and play and it usually works no problem.

hmmm.... i may have to try steam version :)

The game completely refuses to run in a window. I've set it in the command options. Tweaked it in the .ini file. It still tries to run in 800x600 full screen. The game will not work. I would encourage telling people not to purchase it.

If it refuses to run windowed you don't have set both fullscreens to 0 and added AllowWindowedMode=1 under [Graphics Options]
