Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II

Not working, need help.
I have owned this game for a while, and it used to work. But, I got to the ice planet with the handmaidens (the title of which I don't remember) and ran into the black screen storyline bug. So I had to quit playing. Then we had to buy a new harddrive and get that reinstalled. It still worked, but I never got very far. Then we had to get ANOTHER new harddrive and now it won't play.
I click [play] in the steam library, and the game loads up. The "Lucas Arts" logo plays, the "Obsidian" logo plays, and it crashes. Every time
On some of the other forums I've found a few fixes. Disable steam overlay. Done, still doesn't work. Turn Fullscreen=1 to Fullscreen=0 in the .ini file. Done, still doesn't work. And I've installed the TSL Restored Content Mod 1.8.3, and it still doesn't work. All three still have the 2 logos and then crash.
I'd really really like to play this game. Could anyone help me out with any more suggestions or anything? So very much appreciated.

What are your PC specs?
Also downloading the Restored Content Mod fixed hundreds of bugs so doing that by itself might fix your problem.

Playing on 64-bit systems or with windows 8 causes specific problems. Find a thread by Hassat Hunter (or Hunter Hassat?) to look for the fix. Also, make sure you run this in XP compatabilty mode. Have you downloaded TSLRCM 8.3.1? This has bug fixes and restores content left unfinished in the game code by the developers. It's a good mod that doesn't mess around with the intent of the vanilla game.

Edit: Only download the mod from the original developer site at deadlystreams. Check the read me info for the mod before downloading to ensure it's coming direct from the source.
