you are most likely getting said error because you are not running the launcher before the game try to open the launcher manualy and let it open the game for you and try to verify game file integrity

I have Vista, you have to re-install. Your Operating system shouldn't matter as long as it meets the minimum requirements.

If you are facing this error with Assassin’s Creed 3 on Steam, then go to this location /steamapps/common/assassinscreed3. Here you will see two exe files whom you need to right click and select “Run as Administrator.” Along with this you also need to clear your local PC’s temp folder. You can do this by typing prefetch in Start > RUN and than delete all files.

It worked here.

There is a way to fix this. OK it is completely idiotic, but it worked.
If you have a 5 or 6 series cards and you are crashing at the cutscenes or through the gameplay or getting AS3SP.exe stopped working.

1) Get EVGA Precision X or MSI afterburner.
2) Downclock your GPU clock by 50 or so. Alternatively you can bump your voltage as well and it will work(at least this worked for me), I went from 1088mv to 1100mv and it worked for a while, then I had to bump it to 1113mv and it still works fine.

Now my cards are NOT overclocked, they are bone stock, but aparently they are just too awesome for AS3, so you have to tone them down. I have no words for this, but there are so many things that are wrong with this f-in game, why should this be any different.

I am running GTX580s in SLI and NO driver worked to fixed this bug. I went as far back as 304.48 from July. Nada.
This is the only thing that worked for me.
Don't ask why, I don't know.
But give it a shot.
