Avernum is hard, specially at the beggining. But there are plenty of side quests to gain exp. and money.
Yeah I manage to pass them eventually however I do remember that there were many times my party got owned the moment the combat started. Sadly I'm stuck at the Aranea Boss.
Figured it out. If you go north from the Avernum Fort that you start the game in, you will encounter those LARGER Nephil (I forget what they are called, but it's only a little bit different than the word Nephil...I think Nephilam?), and if you kill all of those guys, you get a lot more experience.
I did that, and then I went way back up to that Aranea cave and VERY CAREFULLY kicked their asses using my scrolls (which I hate using, I like to keep as many as I possibly can in case I fight REALLY ridiculous enemies later on), and beat them that way. Make sure you don't step on the runes, and if you can help it, make sure at least your Priest spell user has that spell that can counter mind effecting spells, BECAUSE DAZE IS ANNOYING AS ♥♥♥♥!
Of course, I played Avernum 1-5 over the past 10 years
I remember the most flagrant moments like that were the worm summoner, the first aranea cave, the random slith warrior packs, and the aranea boss.
