Is it worth buying, with a metascore of 76?
Is this game like arcanum and how is the dialogue and combat?

Been thinking of buying this game and wanted some info from people who have played it.

76 is a pretty good score.

You can get the demo from here: http://www.avernum.com/avernum/index.html

Depends. If you played the original Exile, this game will be a lot different to you. It has the same basic plot and story, but they took away a lot of the hardcore RPG stuff that was in the first Exile. Still, decent game overall.

this is a good game for people who like the original avernum games and for old-style rpg fans

It's on the Humble Bundle, get you some.

I played exile as it was released, then bought the series again five or so years ago. This game is not exile... It's a bit of a, idk, culture shock almost expecting exile with just better graphics. That said it's still a great game ;-) I'm glad I bought it on Humble Bundle though. Helps curb some of the disappointment, lol.

The new Avernum is more of an Avadon than Exile, which is disappointing to me because of the changes in mechanics (I find the old one much more convenient), but the game itself still provides great enjoyable experience. There are lots of quests, tons of exploration to do, the atmosphere itself is very unique (can't remember anything close to this world except Arx Fatalis). So, yeah, it's still worth playing and buying.

I agree slayer-- that is a perfect way to say it, I still like the game and am enjoying it. But much prefer the mechanics of Exile.

Honestly, when it comes to Metacritic, I completely ignore it unless it's in the low 50s or lower. And even then I treat it only as "be wary, do more research".

Metacritic itself is a terrible site that uses extremely dubious methods. Adam Sessler's rant on it awhile back was a good explanation of why it's bad.

As for the game itself, I only recently got introduced to Spiderweb Games via the Humble Weekly, but I'm enjoying it so far. Well worth the price of the bundle and then some.

I agree, it's not quite Exile, but it's still pretty good. If you like old-school party-based RPGs, you could do much worse than this game. Don't pay attention to the metascore.

I have fallen in love with this game. I never thought I would enjoy an old-school role-playing game. I should have thought more, apparently.

If you get away from the fact the graphics are not 'glorious' and just play the game, you will love it. It's hard to find RPG's with this feel and this one does it right for sure. It's a small price to pay and a game you will come back to over and over again! :D:

The Avernum series is pretty much Elder Scrolls except that it's isometric, turn based, and you get 4 characters, and you call lizard and cat people Sliths and Nephils.

metacritic can be wrong or right
the demo is long so you ll get your opinion
there is a lot of reading on this game and using your imagination (that I like)
90+ hours so far, haven`t finished because I moved to other games
made me buy every single game from SpiderWeb
I am kinda nostalgic for good games like this, and also a games collector.
I say you play the demo then decide for yourself
I paid full price on steam for this one and I am satisfied,
I paid almos full price for Shadowrun returns (pre ordered) and made me furius,
this game is better. Just an example .... both are isometric turn based RPG
