What a waste of time... Now I have alot of bad things to say about this version of the game but before I go forward with my stinging remarks allow me to talk about the few good things about Doom 3 BFG Edition.
If you dont happen to own a copy of Doom1/2/3 or the Doom 3 expansions and you can pick this up for less than $12 bucks I say go for it. Doom 1 & 2 runs great on a new console without a bunch of mucking about and if you really wanna have some fun you can take 10 minutes to rip the WAD and mod it with Brutal Doom and really have some fast paced, blood and gore Doom action. Doom 3 has been given a "overhaul" and comes with the Expansion Resurrection of Evil and a whole new expansion called The Lost Mission.
This is where I stop being nice and break out the hammers for gleeful dissection of this half ♥♥♥♥♥ mess of a product.
First of all I love Doom as a whole and have been playing it since it first spawned forth from the minds of those crazy ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥s from iDsoft. Doom 3 was a flat out amazing game when it came out over a decade ago and sported the best graphics when it came to textures, dynamic lighting and shadows for its time. So then why does this game look of absolute crap for it being an updated version??? I thought that giving something an "OVERHAUL" ment that it would look far better then perviously....so what the ♥♥♥♥ happened here? The geometry in the game as a whole is awful and anything "round" looks more like swollen polygons, the lighting has been "updated" so now everything is brighter which outright kills the concept of the place being a DARK SCARY PLACE!
Yes, I understand that not being able to hold your weapon and the flashlight at the same time was a bit of a faff in the orignal but the dynamics of game play was based around these mechanics. It was clunky but it added to the survival horror aspects to the game. You had to rely on a well placed head thwap with the flashlight to deal with smaller undeads or if you find yourself in a pitch black room full of baddies with nothing more than the trace fire and muzzle flashes to light up the room. Now you have a chest mounted flashlight that uses the F.E.A.R method of running down on battery then slowly charges back up again,,,but now the environmental lighting is ALOT brigther through out the game so you dont really need the damn flashlight. In the orignal there were whole areas in the game that the point was to navigate through a darken lab or industiral complex holding a light in one hand, with your other hand shoved up to your face with a thumb in mouth and praying that the local demon hell spawns wont come out to play "peek-a-boo-now-die"
Another thing that was senselessly removed from the game was the ability zoom your aim in. I know it may not have been a "true irondight" aim feature but it was great to use if you want to HIT YOUR ♥♥♥♥ING TARGET FROM ACROSS A LARGE ROOM!!! I mean really why has so far this "new updated version" has just been more of a stripping of what made it good and replacing them with child safety mats. Gotta bring this game down to the level of boring "on-rails-follow-the-leader" FPS players of today. They even went ahead and gave it Xbox360 controller support...which is ♥♥♥♥ing awful!!!! hold down the left trigger to run??? RB for "melee"??? oh wait thats right its NOT a melee it just switches to your fist. Are you guys at iDsoft eating paint chip or did you choose to code this game with your heads in a bucket of warm wallpaper paste??? I know you guys can utilize a controller properly I've seen it in your other games sooo WHAT THE ♥♥♥♥?!!??!!!
Well I guess we can all be happy that the updated textures, widescreen support and character models look better...or do they? The truth is that even with the "updated textures" and all that cack its still not that much of a leap forward compared to some of the High-Res mods found on the internet and if you already own a copy of Doom 3 you can tune it up yourself FOR FREE!!!! Alot of the mods that have been made over the years make Doom 3 look amazing to the point where the old Doom 3 can proudly stand waving its willy in the face of the BFG Edtion. Since these are just mods you still get all these wonderful new addiitions without taking away any of the core gaming mechanics or features that get stripped out in BFG....Hmmmm I wonder which sounds better???
So basicly this was a lack luster, dumb down, poor retread of a port that is barely a shadow of its former self than being an imporvment. I picked this up at a local store for $10 and I was let down completely. The Lost MIssion was a joke and since I already own all the Doom games plus all the expansions I pretty much paid $10 just for that and in return I got an add-on that breaks the games controls and a weak not scary environment since someone seemed content to leave all the light switches glued in the on position.
If you really want to play Doom 3 how it was intended just find a copy of the orignal and Google some mods for it. you'll find that the experience is alot more thrilling and if you want to use your controller just download MKcontroller or Xpadder and map it how you like it.
I dont like giving scores for games but if you want an idea of what it would be in this case here it is, while I give the orignal Doom 3 10 out of 10....Doom 3 BFG Edition gets a wet 2 because its watered down ♥♥♥♥!
