Crash on startup
I can't even get the game to start, when I launch from steam my screen goes completely grey and then I get a message saying "Doom 3 BFG edition has stopped working" after which I have to close it. I'm trying to run it on a laptop with an Intel core i7-740QM and an ATI Mobility radeon HD 5870. Is there a fix for this?

That actually made it not crash for me, but all I got was a little white box and mostly black screen, then a fully white screen...nothing I could do with it.

HONESTLY I had that problem and I upgraded my graphics card 2 days ago and it has worked fine so it might be the graphics card

Everytime I try to run it I just get a blue window of command prompts saying there was an error and that it shut itself down. the main line of importance seemed to be:
ERROR: GL_ARB_draw_elements_base_vertex not available

I tried running in compatibility mode for XP as well, same problem.

Look at the Minimum System Requirements for the Game.

Using recommendation from DarthMocker I was able to run it on Win7 Pro. It finally told me that I was missing a file and need to re-install DirectX. Which I got from http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/search.aspx?q=directx, after which I can now run it.

I solved the problem by installing updated atioglxx.dll library. You should look in internet for atioglxx.dll version 6.14.1011631.Unzip the file , then put it into C:\Windows\SysWOW64 folder (this work for win 7 64 bit version). If you have win 7 32bit put it into C:\Windows\System32 .
