DOOM 3: BFG Edition

Am I the only one who's satisfied with BFG edition?
I am a Doom 3 original player since 2004.
I actually downloaded the Doom 3 beta leaked version, when
the dead bodies didn't just vanish into thin air haha. good times.

Doom 3 was a very fresh experience at that time, although Doom 3 wasn't really the
same genre as its predecessors. Despite the fact, I was very
surprised and pleased with the overall experience.
Doom 3 was a very good FPS game overall.

Anyway...
I happened to see many "DONT BUY THIS" threads,
but I actually like this version so I decided to share my thoughts..

I actually think Doom 3 BFG edition is better than vanilla Doom 3 in many ways.
Let me list them you.

I don't want to make this an "argument" discussion thread,
so I will just keep it short.

- Better loading time
- Better optimization overall
- Less bugs than original
- Better facial texture graphics
- minor gameplay cons fixed

The graphics actually look better to me. Well, it's not actually "graphics" that look
better, but overall game "visuals" looks better than the original, to me at least .

- Facial texture graphics got better. This actually looks better, and make the
characters more believable.
- Overall gamma of shadows got brighter. Players can now distinguish which is monster,
which is background faster. It's still very dark game though. But I think this is a fix,
and I like it. Looks more vibrant.
- I saw threads where BFG editon has lower quallity textures than original
textures. I compared it.
BFG edition has more mooshy, creamy feeling texture to it, since it's
originally designed for consoles.
Original has more sharp and more like rectangular particle sharpness graphics to it.
Since original has much darker shadows, it looks a little sharpener.

Despite, I am satisfied with BFG version graphics. I don't thik players need to be
supper catchy and sensitive about this particular issue.
Some character models actually look better and polished than original version.

- I did tryout sikkmod + wulf texture packs. It was okay. High detail textures, more moody,
bloomy, shiny, overall better looking game. But somehow, I just feel more attached
to the original graphics. It feels more "doom"ish.

The flashlight embedded on armor decision was convenient decision for console users.
I understand this, and it does affect "a little" to the game experience, but I actually
like this better. Swapping from flashlight to guns all the time did get annoying after a while.

Getting to see where u r going makes u defenseless for a moment added a little more
"scares" to the experience, but after few hours into the game, most players master
the quick swapping technique anyway. No need to constantly swapping flashlight and guns is a good touch.

Addition to Doom3, there's expansion pack, some new levels,
and Doom 1 and 2.

Ofcourse there are CONS.

BFG edition doesn't provide MODS. What a shame.. I tried out the graphics mod with
original Doom 3,
but I prefer the B better, so I guess I'm okay with this.

For Doom 1&2, I don' think BFG edition supports cheat codes.

I see some threads complaing BFG edition not working or crashing.
I didn't have any of those expereicnes so far. No crashes or anything.

Comp Spec:
WIN 7 64bit
AMD 955 CPU
GTX 460
8GB RAM
running 1920x1080 resolution,
all highest detail settings, 8 anti, running at higher than 60fps
no lagging or feezing, running fine.

Overall, the "Doom 3" BFG editon provides much faster loading times,
better FPS optimization, minor bug fixes, minor UI polishes, some tweaks
to gameplay here and there, improved texture quality, and just better
gameplay experience overall.

I got mine for $5.
For $5, you get Doom1,2,3, Expansion pack, and new levels.
I'm very satisfied with this version of the game.
I don't think u can ask more for $5 than this.

But you guys are missing the point...its WORKING FOR YOU! its a great game WHEN IT WORKS people have different operating systems, drivers, etc. which basically make it impossible to find what makes the game work improperly people are actually paid to test and find out what conflicts. Now give them they will never find them all but based on the posts on steam im seeing more than just a couple of problems basically, saying it without saying it! they only tested on a certain operation system windows 8 and up bacause i have 7 and im having video problems. Just saying anyways glad you guys like the game ive played original too and was looking foward to BFG...:/

The solution to your issue is on the front page of this forum. It's simple.

It's not that simple, you are being ignorant to the issue at hand. I don't believe anybody buying these games are first time doom players, most of us are buying it because we love doom and want to play it again. But the game flat out doesn't work for a good 50-60% of the people purchasing the game, and people have every single right to be upset about buying something with real money that does not work. Even if there are solutions or fixes, it doesn't change the fact that the product itself is faulty. Not to mention for many users (myself included) there is just nothing you can do to fix it. If the game worked for everyone (as it obviously should) nobody would be complaining.

This exactly. I'm sure I'll love the game as soon as they update it properly or whatever. As for right now though, it's really hard to be satisfied with a game that won't launch at all.

ATM I am hating it just because I can't get the stereoscopic 3D working (ghosting/crosstalk)! GRRRRRRRRR

What was the point of including it if you are going to get so much crosstalk/ghosting? Only way to fix it is to sit way back but I am playing on a desktop for christs sake.

I'm happy with it, love all the Dooms! :ftlhuman:

How many of you in this thread have the original Doom 3 and if you do, how many in here have tried to run in Win 7 and Win 8?

I can run Original Doom 3 and DOOM 3 BFG in Win 7 with no problems and i´m using Nvidia Geforce GT 230 card, so there must be something wrong with BFG edition in graphics when people can´t play DOOM 3 BFG.

OP
No. You are not the only to enjoy the BFG edition. I like it too.
Thanks for an awesome summary of the new edition.
My 2c - BFG is definitely worth picking up on sale. Full price - not really, but in the end it's between you and your wallet.

I'm sorry to hear of people having issues with running the game. I've bought a few Steam doozies in my time as well that just would not work (looking at you Wings of Prey...). For my part, I completed the original Doom3 twice and was only going to buy the BFG edition once it hit a good sale price. I wasn't expecting much, but i'm 23 hours in and the game feels much better than i remembered.

To the OP, 2 other improvements to the BFG verison is they have changed the hideous footstep sounds from the original into something far more subdued - gawd that used to be an immersion killer listening to clip-clop, clip clop as you moved about. Also the game is no longer frame capped @ 30fps. Circle strafing imps at 60fps with motion blur on is seriously cool.

Another point I want to make concerns the direction iD took with the Doom franchise; there will be those that recall from 2004 the sense of disappointment that they went from the run and gun roots of the first 2 games and went for a horror based crawlfest with a bit more story in Doom3, despite the general agreement it was a solid game.

It was almost like people felt they should have called the game something other than Doom. I have to say that this game has aged quite well, from a gameplay perspective. Really, how many of us still play Doom style games nowadays (I know, strafe running past your own rockets is neat, but that's besides the point.) It's all semi-realistic,military spec stuff nowadays.

The spiritual successor to the first 2 Dooms is probably Serious Sam but these sort of games only hold my attention for short lengths of time nowadays; this, despite us all being fanatics of the first 2 games, back when the genre was fresh.

Hmm.. that sucks.
My OS is Win 7 64bit. Both Doom 3 and BFG edition Doom 3 works fine.

My guess is BFG edition is not fully optimized with specific graphics cards.
Mine's GTX 460 and it works fine.

Oh, now you mentioned the other improvements, I can feel the difference too haha.
The fps are definitely much better optimized in BFG edition. I guess this is also a big reason
y I'm having better gameplay experience in BFG edtion than in original Doom 3.

Too bad it doesn't support mods or cheats though.

But as a Doom player since Doom 2 (floppy disk age),
and a Doom universe lover,
I had a lot of fun with it :D

I totally agree with your metions with modern FPS. It's all modern warfare background,
can carry only up to 2 guns, so many cinematic cutscenes that tries to mimick action movies, or esports style FPS games. I actually also like COD/BF style FPS too. But the problem is most FPS these days are just.. basically the same. No creativity in them.
it's more like FPS genre is now stuck with this... "formula".

Look at the biggest/most popular FPS these days.
1. Call of duty
2. Battlefield
3. Counter strike
Since they all take in modern age, they all have same background, same guns,
same suits, same all human enemies, same vehicles..

There are more other popular "online FPS", but most of them also
takes place in modern age too. The only difference is they are more focused with
"esports". So it's basically Counter Strike style. Most online FPS are.

Borderlands is FPS genre too, but it's more close to RPG in FPS style genre,
so I didn't put in that list.

I hope some developers take risks on changing the "formula" of modern FPS genre oneday.

I agree. I have never owned Doom 3 on PC and now that I do now. I see how the BFG editon is, I would probably would of payed more. ($15 or so) I have not had any issues running it.I'm running at 120fps and the game is damn scary at some points. I'm really liking it. I don't see what people are complaing about.

Absolutely, if you have never played Doom3 before, and assuming you don't have issues running it like the AMD users are, then you will find Doom3 to be an authentic space horror FPS. A real bargain if you got it on the sale.
